A contested federation
Treat any claim about "the Mexican athletics federation" with care. As of 2026 the position is unresolved and at least three bodies have claimed the role.[1]
The Federación Mexicana de Asociaciones de Atletismo is a civil association that says it has governed the sport since 1939. Its long-serving president led it from 2010; the national sports commission disowned the federation in 2015 and it went more than a decade without public funding.[1]
The chronology since is documented:
- February 2025 — a former sports-commission official proclaimed himself president; neither the Olympic committee nor World Athletics recognised him at that point.[1]
- 9 April 2025 — World Athletics sanctioned and de-recognised the sitting executive for failing to apply its own constitution on presidential eligibility. Five sanctions followed: no World Athletics Series event in Mexico, no accreditation for the board, no attendance, speech or vote at Congress, grants withheld, and officials barred from development programmes — to remain until the federation demonstrates a new fair election.[2]
- July-August 2025 — the president resigned; an extraordinary assembly behind closed doors elected a successor, with the sports commission and Olympic committee present at World Athletics' request. Opponents called it a simulation.[3]
- 2 December 2025 — the Mexican Olympic Committee publicly de-recognised that body, its president stating that it had produced no letter of recognition from the international federation.[4]
Sources then diverge on which body World Athletics currently recognises, and that contradiction could not be resolved from a primary source.[5]
The single most practically important fact. The federation states that "after 12 years, the marks from the national championships will be endorsed by World Athletics" — that is, that for roughly a dozen years marks set at Mexico's principal domestic championship were not internationally ratifiable. That is the federation's own claim and no independent confirmation was found, but if accurate it matters enormously for any Mexican athlete whose record rests on domestic marks from that period.[1]
No selection criteria are published. In practice the government sports commission announced and framed Mexico's team for the 2025 World Championships. Unlike Brazil, Argentina and Colombia, Mexico currently has no publicly verifiable federation document that records national-team selection in athletics.[6]
