What is the FIJLKAM?

The Federazione Italiana Judo Lotta Karate Arti Marziali (FIJLKAM) is the national federation for judo in Italy, and also for wrestling, karate and other martial arts. The International Judo Federation lists it under that name as its member for Italy.[1]

The federation presents itself as the successor of an older multi-sport body: it is “l’erede diretta della FAI (Federazione Atletica Italiana), fondata a Milano un secolo prima”.[5] Its home page invites readers in its own words: “Entra a far parte della più grande famiglia degli sport di combattimento riconosciuta dal Coni.”[3]

What does the FIJLKAM govern or do?

The federation’s site is organised by sector: judo, wrestling (lotta), karate and martial arts, with a separate section for personal defence (Difesa Personale MGA).[3] Its federal calendar also covers aikido, ju-jitsu, sumo, capoeira, grappling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and pankration.[3]

It handles membership registration (tesseramento), a training catalogue (catalogo formativo) and an Olympic centre, each of which has its own section of the site.[3] Its history records national judo teams from 1951, when “Debutta a Salisburgo, nella Mitropa Cup, la Nazionale maschile di Judo.”[4]

When was the FIJLKAM founded and where is it based?

Origins. The federation’s history opens in 1902, when “nasce a Milano la FAI (Federazione Atletica Italiana)”.[4] By the same history, the FAI became the Federazione Italiana Atletica Pesante (FIAP) in 1933, the Federazione Italiana Lotta Pesi Judo (FILPJ) in 1974, and the Federazione Italiana Lotta Pesi Judo Karate (FILPJK) in 1995, when karate joined.[4]

Present name. “Il 1° luglio 2000 l’Assemblea Nazionale deliberò di separare gli sport di combattimento dalla pesistica”, creating the FIJLKAM alongside a separate weightlifting federation.[5]

Seat. Via dei Sandolini 79, 00122 Ostia Lido (Roma).[3]

How is the FIJLKAM recognised?

International Judo Federation. The IJF lists the “Federazione Italiana Judo Lotta Karate Arti Marziali” as its national federation for Italy, with Giovanni Morsiani as president and its seat at Ostia Lido.[1]

European Judo Union. The EJU’s list of member federations includes the “National Judo Federation of Italy”.[2]

CONI. The federation describes itself on its home page as a “famiglia degli sport di combattimento riconosciuta dal Coni”, recognised by the Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano (CONI), and carries the CONI logo there.[3] Its history records that in 1929 “Il CONI accentra a Roma tutte le Federazioni Sportive”.[4]

What does the FIJLKAM organise?

Federal calendar. The federation publishes a federal calendar of events across its sectors, from judo, wrestling and karate to aikido, ju-jitsu, sumo and the other disciplines it administers.[3]

National teams. Its history dates the first appearance of the men’s national judo team to the 1951 Mitropa Cup in Salzburg and that of the women’s national judo team to Kroměříž in 1966.[4] It also records that judo entered the Olympic programme for men at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.[4]

Who are its members?

The federation is organised through regional committees. Its list of Comitati Regionali, described as an “Elenco dei Comitati Regionali della FIJLKAM con indirizzi e contatti”, covers the Italian regions from Piemonte and Valle d’Aosta to Sicilia and Sardegna, together with the autonomous provinces of Bolzano/Bozen and Trento.[6]

Membership is handled through tesseramento, the registration section of the federation’s site, which introduces the federation in its own words as a “famiglia” of combat sports.[3]
