What is FIDE?
FIDE — the Fédération Internationale des Échecs — is chess's world governing body, founded in Paris in 1924 under the motto Gens una sumus, "we are one people," with nearly 200 national federations and IOC recognition.[1] [2]
What does FIDE govern?
The laws of chess; the World Championship cycle and the Candidates; the biennial Olympiad; the Elo rating list published monthly; the title system (Grandmaster and below, awarded on published norms and rating thresholds); arbiter certification; and anti-cheating regulation — an increasingly central task in the engine era.[2] [3]
Why does it matter?
A FIDE rating and title are among the most durable credentials in any sport — mathematically defined, publicly listed since the 1970s, and held for life.[2] [3]
