What it is
The Federación Colombiana de Triatlón was created in Cali on 28 May 1987, and names its founder and first executive committee. It is a private non-profit entity within the national sports system, holding sports recognition from the Ministry of Sport. It reports 14 affiliated leagues and approximately 632 athletes across all categories — the only specific athlete count published by any of the four triathlon federations here.[1]
How the national team is selected
Colombia gives the clearest documentary answer in the sport, because both the criteria and the actual team designations are published as numbered resolutions.[2]
Resolución 004 of 3 February 2026 sets the criteria for national teams in international events and multi-sport games. An athlete must be affiliated to the federation and to one of its leagues and clubs; be at least 16; and have finished within the top 15% of participants in their category at a national-circuit triathlon within the preceding fifteen months, or in the top 15% of the previous year's national circuit standings, or have won their category at a league championship in the same window. Registration for world and regional championships "can only be done through the federation." Colombians resident abroad may qualify on equivalent events in their country of residence, subject to approval and to being federated to compete for Colombia.[3]
A further layer sits above the federation for multi-sport games. A December 2025 resolution as amended in May 2026 reproduces the Colombian Olympic Committee's own rule: in individual events all athletes must be projected to finish between first and fourth, with relay members required to have qualified individually. The federation's criteria cannot override it.[4]
The record of a selection is then a resolution "by means of which the national selection of triathletes that will participate in [the event] is designated," naming each athlete with category and league plus the coach, on the strength of a preselection process and the endorsement of the national technical commission.[5]
The annual licence is Federada, valid for the calendar year, bought through a three-step chain — club, then league, then federation — and it is an express precondition of national-team membership.[6]
