What it is

The Federación Colombiana de Atletismo is structured as a federation of departmental leagues. Orlando Ibarra — a lawyer, former thrower and former president of the Atlántico athletics league — was elected president by the assembly of affiliated leagues on 11 March 2026 for 2026-2030, succeeding Félix Marrugo. Note that one continental directory still lists the predecessor.[1]

Its website was returning errors on every path when this page was researched, though its document store and its event-entry platform both remained live — the latter hosting entries for the 2026 Pan American Senior Championships in Medellín, which Colombia hosted with 44 delegations.[2]

How the national team is selected

Colombia's answer is structural rather than numeric: selection is made by numbered Resolución of the executive committee, and the resolution names every person selected.

A representative example designates the squad for a continental under-20 championship and then lists 89 athletes plus ten coaches, delegates, physiotherapists and a doctor — each with identity number, event and league — signed by the president and secretary general, with a note that the original is held in the federation's archive. The recitals state that the federation "has been monitoring the athletes jointly with the members of the National Technical Commission and that the designation was made under all the technical criteria."[3]

But the criteria themselves are not published. The resolution asserts that technical criteria were applied without stating them, and no standing criteria document with numeric standards could be located. The numeric standards that do apply to Colombian athletes are World Athletics' entry standards, not federation minima.[3]

For multi-sport games a further layer sits above the federation: the Colombian Olympic Committee's own 2026 resolution requires athletes in individual events to be projected to finish between first and fourth, assessed by the committee's sporting directorate together with the federation.[4]
