What it is

The Federación Argentina de Box was founded on 23 March 1920. Its own history records a split in 1922 that produced a rival association running parallel national championships, reunified in November 1923 — reunification being the condition the mayor of Buenos Aires set for lifting the city's ban on boxing. It has occupied its Boedo site since 1937, where it runs a stadium and a gymnasium.[1]

Unusually for the region, it governs both codes. It issues both amateur and professional licences, publishes the Argentine professional rankings and the status of national titles, and its board has separate amateur and professional boxing commissions. There is no separate national professional commission in Argentina comparable to Mexico's or Colombia's.[2]

Licensing, selection and the rival body

The federation disaffiliated from the IBA in July 2023, in a letter written jointly with the Argentine Olympic Committee on the ground that neither the IBA nor its continental body had answered the IOC's demands, having already boycotted the IBA's 2023 world championships. It appears first on World Boxing's list of countries eligible for the 2023 inaugural congress, and an Argentine chairs World Boxing's championship commission.[3] [4]

As in Brazil, a rival IBA-aligned body exists, formed by people who left at the time of that exit and admitted to the IBA in November 2025, which sent boxers to the IBA world championships in Dubai.[3]

The licence is unusually well documented and is the best example on this site of what an amateur boxing credential actually involves: compulsory registration in the federation's digital system; a combined licence application and coach's authorisation signed by boxer and coach; a federation medical form completed and signed by a licensed doctor recording all required studies; identity document, photographs and parental authorisation for minors; and a prescribed battery of medical tests — blood panel, urinalysis, neurological examination, visual acuity and fundus, dental certificate, EEG, ECG and chest X-ray, each signed and stamped by the relevant specialist. Governing rules include a post-knockout medical protocol and a pre-weigh-in protocol.[5]

The federation's members are the provincial federations, and provincial and regional tournaments feed national championships by age group. A governance decision of May 2026 is worth recording: the federation notified affiliates that it was suspending the "open" format of national championships — one venue hosting all 24 jurisdictions — as economically unviable, and recommended reverting to the historic regional elimination system.[6]
