What is the CBJ?

The Confederação Brasileira de Judô, founded on 18 March 1969, is the national governing body for judo in Brazil — one of the sport's leading nations and the source of much of its modern competitive tradition outside Japan. It is recognised by the IJF, the PJC and the Brazilian Olympic Committee, and takes in 25 state federations.[1] [2]

What does it do?

It runs the national calendar — the Campeonato Brasileiro by age group, the state-selection championship, the Meeting Nacional, the Copa Brasil and university judo — publishes the national competition regulation, operates the Ranking Nacional, handles anti-doping compliance with the ABCD, and runs Educação CBJ, its coach-education arm.[1] [3]

It sets the national rules for awarding belts

Through its Conselho Nacional de Graus, the CBJ issues the national regulation for the examination and award of judo grades, which every state federation must follow. State federations form graduation commissions and may examine only up to the grades the confederation permits; the higher dan grades are reserved to the CBJ itself. That makes a Brazilian dan certificate traceable to a single national standard — not something every judo country can say.[3]

How does it select the national team?

Athletes are licensed through their state federation and accumulate points on the national ranking through the domestic calendar; the confederation's technical staff then convokes the Seleção Brasileira for continental, world and Olympic competition, weighing the national ranking, results at designated selective events, and IJF World Ranking position for senior international entries. Paulo Wanderley Teixeira — who led the CBJ from 2001 to 2017 and the Brazilian Olympic Committee in between — was elected president again in March 2025.[1] [2]
