What it is

The Confederación Argentina de Atletismo is, in the words of its own statute, "a Public-Benefit Civil Association constituted on 24 September 1954," registered in the national register of public-benefit entities in 1994. Its legal domicile is Buenos Aires and its working seat is in Las Varillas, Córdoba. It is federal in structure, with 21 councillors — one for each provincial or metropolitan federation.[1] [2]

A caution for anyone citing it: two live websites both present as the confederation, carrying the same numbered bulletins and the same files.[3]

How the national team is selected

Argentina publishes its criteria — and publishes, in the same breath, that they confer no entitlement.

The controlling document is a numbered Boletín. It provides that the confederation will designate pre-teams and national teams on the proposal of the national technical commission, "taking into account performances, evaluation processes, statistics, reference marks, competitive possibilities, the training process, sporting condition before the competition and any other relevant technical consideration." And then, expressly: achieving the reference marks "does not imply definitive designation in the respective teams, nor does it oblige the confederation to any confirmation."[4]

Two further conditions are stated plainly. It is "an indispensable condition to be able to represent the country to have the sporting licence… up to date and personal documentation current, including visa." And team composition "will additionally depend on economic possibilities," and may be limited by disciplinary considerations or by the quotas allocated by the Olympic committee or the international federation.[4]

The confederation does publish actual reference marks per event and per championship, with fixed qualifying windows, and requires marks to be achieved under international ratification rules with doping control where a South American or better record is equalled. The document that records a selection is a further numbered bulletin naming the team.[4] [5]

Registration matters here too: athletes not registered with the confederation are not included in the annual rankings, a rule in force since 2012.[6]
