What is British Judo?

The British Judo Association is the body the International Judo Federation lists as its member for Great Britain, under the code GBR.[1] Its site introduces it with the words “We are the National Governing Body for the Olympic Sport of Judo in Great Britain.”[3] It refers to itself as British Judo, and its board page names Andrew Scoular as Chief Executive of the British Judo Association since March 2013.[5] It covers judo in the United Kingdom alongside four home-nation bodies its site names: England Judo, Northern Ireland Judo, Welsh Judo and Judo Scotland.[3]

What does British Judo govern or do?

The association’s site carries the functions it presents to members: finding and organising events, event results and rankings, membership, and the GB Judo section, under which the four home nations are listed.[3] Its governance page publishes the “British Judo Byelaws” and “Governing Body Endorsement Criteria 25-26” among its governance and structure documents, and links to its British Judo Areas.[4]

When was British Judo founded and where is it based?

The International Judo Federation lists the association’s address as “British Judo Association Head Office, Walsall Campus, University of Wolverhampton, Gorway Road”, WS1 3BD Walsall, West Midlands.[1] The association gives the same head office address on its own site.[3] Its board is chaired by Gerry Gualtieri, who the association says was appointed in August 2023; the board also seats board directors, non-executive directors and independent non-executive directors.[5]

How is British Judo recognised?

International federation. The International Judo Federation lists the British Judo Association as the member for Great Britain, with Gerry Gualtieri as president and www.britishjudo.org.uk as its website.[1]

Continental body. The European Judo Union lists a “National Judo Federation of Great Britain” among its members.[2]

Partners. The association’s governance page shows, under “Our Partners”, logos including those of UK Sport, Sport England, the British Olympic Association, the International Judo Federation and the EJU.[4]

What does British Judo organise?

The association runs the British Championships. Its 2026 event hub places the championships at the David Ross Sports Village, Nottingham, with competition scheduled for 12 and 13 December 2026 and categories for pre-cadets, cadets, juniors and seniors.[6] Its site also lists event results, rankings and live streams.[3]

Who are its members?

The association’s home page, in its “British Judo in numbers” panel, read in October 2026, lists 890 clubs and 677 volunteers, without a date.[3] Its board page states that British Judo “is therefore better able to understand and meet customer/ membership needs if the Board is a reflection of its membership base.”[5] The four home-nation bodies — England Judo, Northern Ireland Judo, Welsh Judo and Judo Scotland — appear under the GB Judo heading of its site navigation.[4]
