What it is
The Weightlifting Federation of Armenia is a public organisation governing weightlifting, and is the best-documented federation in the country. Arayik Harutyunyan was elected for a four-year term on 22 January 2025 as sole candidate; the European federation records that he also holds the position of Chief of Staff to Armenia's Prime Minister and previously served as the minister responsible for sport. The IWF president and secretary general attended the election in Yerevan.[1] [2]
Armenia's record includes three Olympic golds — in 1980, 1988 and, for independent Armenia, Israel Militosyan at Barcelona 1992 — with nine world champions and 24 European. It topped the medal table at the 2026 European Championships in Batumi with nine golds, and will host the 2027 IWF World Championships in Yerevan.[3] [4]
How the national team is selected
Two features make this federation unusually legible.
First, its statute makes approving the national-team lists an express competence: the organisation shall draw up and implement the programmes of participation of the national teams in international competition, "approve the lists of national team members," and hear the reports of delegation heads — a power exercised by the executive committee, which meets monthly and minutes each sitting. The statute also expressly defines the organisation's beneficiaries as the members of the national teams, senior, junior and cadet, together with their coaches, referees and medical staff. A constitutional definition of national-team membership of that kind is rare.[5]
Second, the annual regulation for the national championships is itself the selection instrument. Signed by the president in December for the following year, it states that the championships' purposes expressly include "identification of the athletes necessary for the formation of the national teams." It fixes the three championships and their dates, restricts entry to Armenian citizens with identity documents entered by recognised sporting organisations, and publishes minimum qualifying totals per weight class and age group. Entry runs through a preliminary and then a final application, and without the federation's official permission participation is not allowed.[6]
The federation publishes the official protocols of its senior, under-20 and cadet championships, its competition rules, and its table of weight categories, titles and national records.[7]
Above the federation sits Armenian law, which provides that the national teams are formed by the national federations, and — unusually — defines a national-team member as a citizen who competes at the World or European Championships or the Olympic Games. Armenia's sporting-rank ladder is set out here.[8]
