What is TyC Sports?

TyC Sports is an Argentine sports channel distributed on cable and satellite, with a website at tycsports.com and an over-the-top service, TyC Sports Play. Grupo Clarín's business description calls it "la primera señal dedicada al deporte en el país" and dates its screen from 1994; the same text lists national football and basketball teams, the Davis Cup, the Copa América, the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games among the events it has carried[1]. That is the description of a company that was then a shareholder. The English-language Wikipedia entry, used here for background, gives the launch date as 3 September 1994[2].

Ownership changed in 2026. La Nación reported on 26 May 2026 that Grupo Clarín sold its 50 per cent of the channel to Waiken ILW, the Werthein group holding company, which already held the rest, and that the production company Carburando went with it[3]. Infobae reported the same transaction on the same date at a price of USD 25 million[4].

What does TyC Sports cover?

The channel's output is football-led and domestic, built around Argentine club and national-team football, with basketball, tennis, boxing and motorsport alongside it. Grupo Clarín describes it as a multiplatform producer supplying the main channel, TyC Sports Internacional, the TyC Sports Play streaming service, the website, mobile applications and a gaming division[1].

Its domestic football position narrowed in 2026. Chequeado reported that for ten seasons, from 2016 to 2025, Torneos y Competencias S.A. and Tele Red Imagen S.A. carried the second and third tiers — Primera Nacional and Primera B Metropolitana — through TyC Sports and TyC Sports Play, and that the AFA ended those contracts at the close of the 2025 season and moved the matches to its own platform, LPF Play, presented on 9 March 2026[5].

Motorsport production continues through Carburando, which Grupo Clarín describes as producing live coverage of the country's main motor-racing categories for TyC Sports[1].

What are TyC Sports' reach and standing?

On pay television, TotalMedios reported Kantar IBOPE Media measurements making TyC Sports the highest-rated cable channel in Argentina in July 2026 on 2.37 rating points, its second consecutive month at the top, after 3.05 points in June 2026. In the same July table DSports stood fifth on 1.37 points and ESPN eighth on 0.64[6]. Both of those months fell inside the FIFA World Cup, which ran from 11 June to 19 July 2026.

On the web, Semrush recorded 18.25 million monthly visits to tycsports.com in August 2026, third in its Sports category for Argentina behind promiedos.com.ar and ole.com.ar[7].

TotalMedios attributes the strength of those two months to World Cup programming, noting that sport led pay television across the period[6], so the figures are a peak rather than a settled level.

Grupo Clarín's own text describes the channel as "una de las líderes del segmento" and among the first of the cable channels[1]; the Kantar IBOPE measurements above are the audited version of that description.

Since when?

Grupo Clarín dates the channel from 1994 and separately dates the group's entry into producing and transmitting sports events to 1991[1] [8]. The English-language Wikipedia entry, used here for background only, gives 3 September 1994[2].

The ownership chain has two dated steps in 2026. La Nación reported on 26 May 2026 that the Werthein group had, a month earlier, acquired the Nofal family's remaining holding in Torneos, and then bought Grupo Clarín's 50 per cent of TyC Sports, taking the channel to full Werthein ownership[3]. The same report states that Clarín's Flow platform secured a ten-year agreement for access to TyC Sports and DSports programming as part of the transaction[3].

The AFA's termination of the Torneos and Tele Red Imagen contracts took effect at the end of the 2025 season, so the 2026 season was the first in ten years without those divisions on the channel[5].

Why does TyC Sports matter in Argentina's sport?

It was the highest-rated pay-television channel in Argentina in June and July 2026 on Kantar IBOPE's figures[6]. For a reader tracing where an Argentine competition was broadcast, the channel's schedule is a primary route.

Its rights position as of September 2026 is narrower than its audience. The Liga Profesional is carried by TNT Sports Premium and ESPN Premium, not by TyC Sports[5], and the second and third tiers moved to the AFA's own platform for 2026[5]. For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Urgente24 reported on 29 May 2026 that TyC Sports would carry 52 of the 104 matches, including all of Argentina's, sublicensed from DirecTV, which held the Argentine rights; Urgente24 describes DirecTV there as the channel's new controlling shareholder, while the 50 per cent Grupo Clarín sold on 26 May 2026 went to Waiken ILW[9] [3] [4].
