What is TVP Sport?
TVP Sport is the sports television channel of Telewizja Polska (TVP), Poland's public broadcaster, and sport.tvp.pl is its web service; the address tvpsport.pl redirects there. On 25 September 2026 the footer of TVP's own information centre read “© 2014 Telewizja Polska S. A. w likwidacji”.[1]
The company's statute is the Ustawa z dnia 29 grudnia 1992 r. o radiofonii i telewizji. In the consolidated text that the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) serves on its site, a Chancellery of the Sejm file dated 26 August 2022, Article 21(1) reads: “Publiczna radiofonia i telewizja realizuje misję publiczną, oferując, na zasadach określonych w ustawie, całemu społeczeństwu i poszczególnym jego częściom, zróżnicowane programy i inne usługi w zakresie informacji, publicystyki, kultury, rozrywki, edukacji i sportu, cechujące się pluralizmem, bezstronnością, wyważeniem i niezależnością oraz innowacyjnością, wysoką jakością i integralnością przekazu.”[7] That is, public radio and television carry out a public mission by offering varied programmes and services in, among other fields, sport. The file is dated 26 August 2022, and amendments after that date were not checked against it.
What does TVP Sport cover?
In 2026 the channel's largest property was the FIFA World Cup. Telewizja Polska announced on 9 June 2026 that the tournament would open on 11 June and comprise “104 mecze”, 104 matches, and that “Wszystkie mecze mistrzostw świata będzie można oglądać wyłącznie w Telewizji Polskiej – na antenach TVP Sport, TVP 1 i TVP 2 oraz w tvpsport.pl, aplikacji mobilnej TVP Sport i smart TV”. That is, every match could be watched only on TVP's channels and services. It scheduled the opening ceremony on TVP Sport and the opening match on TVP1.[3] That tournament has finished.
Press.pl's report of Nielsen's July 2026 data attributes TVP Sport's position that month to its World Cup coverage, and names the channel beside Polsat Sport 1, Eurosport 1, Eleven Sports 1 and the Canal+ Sport channels in the same market.[4]
Article 21(1) of the broadcasting law, in the 2022 consolidated text read, lists sport among the fields in which public radio and television offer programmes.[7]
How large is TVP Sport's audience?
Television audiences in Poland are measured by Nielsen. Its Polish site publishes no Polish channel data, so the figures here are as reported by others from Nielsen's data.
Press.pl reported on 16 August 2026, from Nielsen data that exclude out-of-home viewing, that in July 2026 TVP Sport had a 2.66 per cent share of all viewing among viewers aged four and over, up from 1.06 per cent in July 2025. The same report gives Polsat Sport 1 1.12 per cent, down from 1.69 per cent, and Eurosport 1 0.34 per cent. Among viewers aged 16 to 59 it gives TVP Sport 2.8 per cent, up from 1.08 per cent.[4] Those are one month's readings, and the month fell during the World Cup, to which Press.pl attributes the rise.[4]
Since when has TVP Sport existed?
Telewizja Polska dates the channel to 2006. Its announcement of 1 June 2026, opening the channel's 20th-anniversary year, states: “TVP Sport wystartowało na rynku 18 listopada 2006 roku”. It sets the culmination of the celebrations for 18 November 2026, which it calls the 20th anniversary of the channel's start.[2] That date is the broadcaster's own account.
The operator's legal position changed in December 2023. The KRRiT, in a statement of 19 December 2025, records: “27 grudnia 2023 roku Minister Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego podjął decyzję o postawieniu spółek mediów publicznych w stan likwidacji.” That is, on 27 December 2023 the Minister of Culture and National Heritage decided to put the public media companies into liquidation.[5] The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage announced on 9 April 2024 that the Sąd Rejonowy dla m.st. Warszawy had made the entry in the Krajowy Rejestr Przedsiębiorców “na mocy którego Telewizja Polska S.A. została postawiona w stan likwidacji”, under which the company was placed in liquidation.[9] The company's own footer on 25 September 2026 still carried the words “w likwidacji”, in liquidation.[1]
Why does TVP Sport matter in Poland's sport?
TVP Sport is the sports channel of the statutory public broadcaster. In the same announcement of 9 April 2024 the Minister of Culture and National Heritage described the State Treasury as “będącego właścicielem 100% akcji Spółki”, the owner of 100 per cent of the company's shares.[9] In 2026 it was one of the three TVP channels that carried the whole of the FIFA World Cup in Poland, and Press.pl headlined its report of Nielsen's July 2026 data “Dzięki mundialowi TVP Sport liderem kanałów sportowych w grupie ogólnej i 16-59”, that is, TVP Sport led the sports channels thanks to the World Cup.[3][4]
Three bodies have published on the public broadcaster's position, and each is quoted in its own words. The KRRiT's statement of 19 December 2025 opens: “Mijają dwa lata od bezprecedensowego w historii przejęcia mediów publicznych w Polsce, do którego doszło na podstawie uchwały, a nie ustawy Sejmu RP.” That is, two years had passed since what it calls an unprecedented takeover of the public media, carried out on the basis of a Sejm resolution rather than a statute; that is the regulator's characterisation.[5] The Media Pluralism Monitor's Poland 2026 page states: “Although PSM's performance has improved, the management structures remained politically-nominated.” It adds: “While the public has positively evaluated changes affecting PSM after the government swap in 2023 (Dąbrowska-Cydzik, 2025), the experts and international organisations continue to point out insufficient impartiality particularly with regard to political and electoral reporting (e.g. OSCE, 2025).”[6] Reporters Without Borders, in its 2026 entry, states: “Public broadcasting is funded by the state, while the privately owned media rely on subscription models, thanks to the relatively large size of the Polish market.”[8] Those are the three bodies' characterisations.
