What is TVNET Sports?

TVNET Sports is the sport section of the Latvian news portal TVNET. It is published on its own subdomain, sports.tvnet.lv, which the portal's main menu links as “Sports” beside Ziņas, TVNET+, Bizness, Sejas, Planēta, Egoiste, Auto, Receptes and Spoki; the portal also links a Russian-language edition, RUS, at rus.tvnet.lv.[2]

The publisher named in the footer is SIA “TVNET GRUPA”, registration number LV40003490052, at Satekles iela 2b in Rīga.[1] The portal's team page lists Gatis Kreceris as “SPORTS redaktors” and Raimonds Ozoliņš as “Sadaļas SPORTS redaktors”.[3]

The owner's own site lists the portal. Postimees Grupp's companies page, under the heading “TVNET Gruppi kuuluvad:”, lists tvnet.lv, its Russian-language edition rus.tvnet.lv, the TVNET+ section, apollo.lv, receptes.tvnet.lv and spoki.lv.[7]

What does TVNET Sports cover?

The section's menu is divided into Basketbols, Futbols, Hokejs, Ziemas sports, Motoru sports, Teniss, Cīņas sports, Volejbols, Vieglatlētika and Citi sporta veidi.[1]

On 25 September 2026 its eight newest items, each labelled “Vakar” (yesterday), carried the retirement from the national team of the basketball player Anete Šteinberga, two items on the national ice hockey team's coach, Teodors Bļugers scoring in an NHL pre-season game, Alberts Šmits approaching an NHL debut, a Latvian footballer's absence from the national team's match against Armenia, Aļona Ostapenko's second-round defeat at a WTA 250 tournament in Seoul, and a feature on an Afghan athlete's medal at the Asian Games. Two of the headlines read “Šteinberga beidz karjeru Latvijas basketbola izlasē” and “Bļugers gūst vārtus NHL pirmssezonas pārbaudes spēlē”.[1] Those are one day's items.

The section carries agency copy. On 4 November 2025 it published “LTV līdz 2029. gadam iegūst tiesības pārraidīt vīriešu un sieviešu basketbola izlašu spēles”, credited to TVNET and the news agency LETA, on the public broadcaster's rights to the national teams' games in FIBA tournaments.[9] LETA sits in the same ownership group: Postimees Grupp's history page records under 2015: “Eesti Meedia omandab Läti Vabariigi suurima uudisteagentuuri ja meediamonitooringu ettevõtte LETA.”[8]

How large is TVNET Sports' audience?

Gemius, an internet audience-measurement company, publishes a monthly ranking of Latvian websites, covering users aged 15 to 75 connecting from Latvia. Its ranking of audited websites for August 2026, published on 7 September 2026, places tvnet.lv second, with 756,800 real users, behind delfi.lv with 769,500.[5] Its ranking for January 2026, published on 6 February 2026, places tvnet.lv first, with 789,000 real users, and states its basis: “Top 20 veidots, balstoties uz 15-75 g.v. auditorijas lielumu interneta lapās, kas tās apmeklējuši, pieslēdzoties internetam no Latvijas teritorijas, izmantojot datorus, mobilos telefonus un planšetdatorus.”[6] Each is one month's reading for the tvnet.lv domain as Gemius lists it, not a separate figure for the sport section.

The August 2026 release also ranks media groups. It places second a “TVNET grupa ar vietnēm tvnet.lv un tā mobilajām aplikācijām latviešu un krievu valodā, apollo.lv un tā mobilo aplikāciju, kā arī spoki.lv”. In its ranking of single sites, apollo.lv is ninth, with 446,400 real users, and spoki.lv 18th, with 181,800.[5]

The Euromedia Ownership Monitor's 2025 report places the portal among “Latvia's largest commercial news portals (Delfi.lv, Tvnet.lv owned by Estonian based media corporations)”, in a sentence stating that they and public service media also provide content in Russian. That is the report's characterisation; it gives no audience figure for it.[4]

Since when has TVNET Sports existed?

No founding date for TVNET or its sport section was retrieved. The portal's pages that could be opened state none, and the company page linked from its footer, tvnetgrupa.lv, could not be reached.[3]

The ownership record is dated. The Euromedia Ownership Monitor's Latvia report, by Anda Rožukalne of Rīga Stradiņš University and published in December 2025, records SIA “Tvnet Grupa” as 100 per cent owned by Postimees Grupp of Estonia, which it records as owned by MM Grupp of Estonia, with Margus Linnamäe as 100 per cent beneficial owner.[4] Postimees Grupp's companies page, retrieved on 25 September 2026, still lists the TVNET portals.[7]

Why does TVNET Sports matter in Latvia's sport?

TVNET is one of the two portals the Euromedia Ownership Monitor names as Latvia's largest commercial news portals, and Gemius's rankings place tvnet.lv first in January 2026 and second in August 2026 among the Latvian websites they list, with the TVNET group second among media groups in August.[4][6][5] Its sport section covers the national teams and Latvian athletes abroad across ten menu sections.[1]

Its ownership sits outside Latvia, in an Estonian group, as the Euromedia report and the owner's own page record, and the same group owns the news agency whose copy the section carries.[4][7][8]
