What is TV4?
TV4 is a commercial television broadcaster. The footer of its site reads “© 2026 TV4 | Org. nr. 556242-7152”.[1] It runs a streaming service, TV4 Play, and a football news site, Fotbollskanalen, whose footer names TV4 AB.[3][6]
Ownership needs a date. Until 2025 TV4 belonged to the Telia group. On 3 June 2025 Konkurrensverket, the competition authority, decided “att lämna Schibsted Media AS förvärv av ensam kontroll över TV4 Media Holding AB utan åtgärd”, the shares being bought from Telia Company AB.[7] Broadband TV News reported on 1 July 2025 that Telia had completed the sale of its TV and Media business, including TV4, to Schibsted.[8]
Commercial broadcasters are licensed differently from the public service companies. Under 4 kap. 3 § of the Radio- och tv-lag, the government grants licences to those holding a public service assignment, and “Mediemyndigheten ger tillstånd i övriga fall.”[5]
What does TV4 cover?
Sport is a standing part of the site's navigation, which on 24 September 2026 listed Fotboll, Hockey, Friidrott and Tennis, and a separate Fotbolls-VM item.[1]
Two domestic leagues name TV4 on their own sites on 24 September 2026. Allsvenskan, the men's football top division, lists “TV4 MEDIAPARTNER” beside Unibet as “HUVUDPARTNER OCH PRESENTING PARTNER”.[2] The SHL, the ice hockey top division, links from its navigation to an SHL category on TV4 Play, carries the offer “Spara 1200:- Teckna TV4-abonnemang & stötta din klubb!”, and also links Telia's television sport page for the SHL.[3] The terms and end dates of either arrangement are not published on the pages retrieved.
Football news runs through Fotbollskanalen, whose headlines of 21 and 22 September 2026 covered Allsvenskan, the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and the Swedish national team.[6]
How large is TV4's audience?
Swedish television viewing is measured by MMS; the figure given here is MMS's as cited by the state media authority. Mediemyndigheten's Mediekonsumtion 2025 states, citing MMS Årsrapport 2024: “Tittartiden på TV4 var 27,4 minuter per dag och på SVT1 var den 23,7 minuter per dag 2024.”[4]
That is an average daily viewing time across 2024 for the TV4 channel alone. It is not a reach figure, it does not include TV4 Play, and it is not a sport figure.[4]
Sifo's reach report for ORVESTO Konsument 2026:1 gives digital figures from its ORVESTO Internet measurement for January to April 2026: a daily net reach of 210 thousand for tv4.se and 427 thousand for TV4 Play.[9] Neither figure is specific to sport.
No viewing figure for Allsvenskan or the SHL on TV4 or TV4 Play could be retrieved.
Since when has TV4 existed?
No founding date for TV4 appears on the broadcaster's own pages as retrieved, and none from an independent source could be retrieved; the page therefore gives no founding year. What can be dated is the company's recent shape.
On 3 June 2025 Konkurrensverket cleared Schibsted Media AS's acquisition of sole control of TV4 Media Holding AB from Telia Company AB, and the sale was reported completed on 1 July 2025.[7][8] On 24 September 2026, Allsvenskan's site named TV4 its media partner and the SHL's site linked to an SHL category on TV4 Play.[2][3] The footer of tv4.se carried the date 2026 and the company number 556242-7152.[1]
These are dated anchors, not a history.
Why does TV4 matter in Sweden's sport?
It matters because the top divisions of men's football and ice hockey both name it on their own sites. Allsvenskan names TV4 as its media partner.[2] The SHL links to an SHL category on TV4 Play from its own site, and its site carries a TV4 subscription offer.[3]
It matters second because of its owner. Since the 2025 transaction TV4 Media Holding AB has been controlled by Schibsted Media AS, whose acquisition of sole control Konkurrensverket cleared on 3 June 2025; TV4's content stays in Telia's television offer, Broadband TV News reported.[7][8]
A statutory limit applies to any exclusive rights a broadcaster holds. Under 5 kap. 9 § of the Radio- och tv-lag, a broadcaster with exclusive rights to an event “som är av särskild vikt för det svenska samhället” may not use them so that a substantial part of the public in Sweden is shut out from seeing it live in free television; the events are those that occur at most once a year and interest a broad public, and the government is to issue regulations naming them.[5]
