What is TV Markíza?

TV Markíza is a Slovak commercial television channel and the flagship of Skupina Markíza. The group's own about page states that it is part of CME, which it describes as operating under the international financial and investment group PPF, and gives 31 August 1996 as the date TV Markíza began broadcasting.[1] The page lists six nationwide channels — TV Markíza, Doma, Dajto, Markíza KRIMI, Markíza KLASIK and Markíza International — and states that the group commercially represents three premium sports channels, Nova Sport 3 SK, Nova Sport 4 SK and Nova Sport 5 SK.[1] It also operates the Voyo streaming service.[1]

The group's descriptions of its own position — that it is the most significant television and media group in Slovakia and that Voyo is the local leader among subscription video services — are the group's, and are reported here as its claims rather than adopted.[1]

On ownership, the Euromedia Ownership Monitor's Slovakia report for 2025 states that since October 2020 PPF Group fully controls CME, which operates TV Markíza, and describes the channel as the country's ratings leader.[2] That characterisation is the monitor's.

What does TV Markíza cover?

In sport the group's central property is domestic football. Skupina Markíza announced on 20 May 2026 that its agreement with the Únia ligových klubov for the Niké liga had been extended to cover the 2027/28, 2028/29 and 2029/30 seasons: all matches exclusive to the Voyo streaming service, one selected match a week in Dajto's Saturday schedule, and a minimum of 192 live broadcasts a season.[3]

The release quotes Peter Gažík, chief executive of Skupina Markíza, saying that Slovak club football has a strong fan base and growing popularity which Voyo's results confirm; Martin Lisý, head of TV Markíza's sports desk, on keeping the same commentary and production team; and, for the league, its president Ivan Kozák and its executive director Michal Mertinyák, the latter tying the agreement to VAR certification and further technical work.[3] Those are the parties' statements about their own agreement.

The league those rights cover published its own 2025/26 attendance figures on 27 May 2026: 584,149 spectators across 194 matches, an average of 3,011.[4]

How large is TV Markíza's audience?

The group's own about page publishes no measured share and names no measurement source.[1] The recognised Slovak television currency is the peoplemeter research run by PMT — established, its own site records, on 12 July 2002 by Slovenská televízia, TV Markíza, TV JOJ, TA3 and the association of media agencies, and operated by Kantar Slovakia since February 2021 — which publishes a daily market share.[6] For 8 September 2026, in the 12-and-over target group including guests and time-shifted viewing, PMT put TV Markíza at 21.2 per cent, Dajto at 3.0 per cent and TV Doma at 2.4 per cent, against 12.6 per cent for Jednotka and 11.2 per cent for TV JOJ.[6] That is a single day's share and not a period average.

The Euromedia Ownership Monitor's 2025 Slovakia report states that “Markíza remains a ratings leader and a major player in the TV advertising market”, without giving a figure.[2] The Media Pluralism Monitor 2026 gives no per-channel share, but states that “Slovakia faces high levels of media ownership concentration, with the top four owners controlling over 60% of the audience in the newspaper, TV, and radio sectors”.[5]

Since when has TV Markíza existed?

The group's about page gives 31 August 1996 as the date TV Markíza began broadcasting.[1] That is the broadcaster's own statement and no independent confirmation of the date was retrieved for this page.

The ownership date is separately attested: the Euromedia Ownership Monitor's 2025 Slovakia report puts PPF Group's full control of CME, the operator of TV Markíza, from October 2020.[2] The current Niké liga rights term was announced on 20 May 2026 and runs through the 2029/30 season.[3]

Why does TV Markíza matter in Slovakia's sport?

It holds the broadcast and streaming rights to the country's top football division through the 2029/30 season, on terms it has published: exclusivity on Voyo, one free-to-air match a week on Dajto, and at least 192 live matches a season.[3] That is the longest-dated broadcast arrangement in Slovak sport for which a primary source could be retrieved, and it covers the division whose own published 2025/26 season total was 584,149 spectators across 194 matches.[3][4]

Its position is also part of the documented ownership question. The Euromedia Ownership Monitor's Slovakia report for 2025 names PPF Group and CME, Penta Investments with News and Media Holding, and the JOJ Group as the dominant players and describes a “clear dual structure” in which diversified domestic groups hold major outlets alongside extensive non-media business interests, creating “structural risks of instrumentalisation and conflicts of interest”.[2] The Media Pluralism Monitor 2026 states that “concerns about indirect political pressure on selected commercial media outlets persisted in 2025” and that “developments at TV Markíza — Slovakia's largest commercial broadcaster — continued to raise questions about editorial independence following earlier management changes and shifts in newsroom practices”.[5] Those are the monitor's published statements, not findings of any adjudicating body.
