What is Tigo Sports?

Tigo Sports is a sports television and streaming service in Paraguay operated by the telecommunications company Tigo. An account of the operator's history published by La Nación on 1 September 2025 states that the company “nació como Telecel en 1992”, that the Tigo brand dates from 2004, and that in 2014 it launched Tigo Sports, which that account calls “el primer canal deportivo del país”; that characterisation is the account's, not this page's.[1]

The trade publication Newsline Report, reporting the launch on 27 January 2014, described it as “Tigo Sports, primer canal paraguayo con exclusividad de deportes, que unificará el deporte nacional en una sola señal”.[2]

Revista PLUS, reporting on 5 October 2023, described the service as running across several platforms — Tigo Sports, Tigo Sports+, Tigo Sports 3 and a mobile application reaching ten countries in Latin and North America — and quoted Tigo Paraguay's director general, Carlos Blanco: “Somos más que un canal de deportes. Acercamos la pasión que late en el corazón de Paraguay, con inversión, innovación y compromiso.” Those are the company's own words.[3]

What does Tigo Sports cover?

Its core holding is domestic football. The Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol agreed a renewal of its audiovisual rights with Tigo on 4 October 2023, for four years running to 2027; ABC Color reported the deal the following day and gave the president Robert Harrison's figure of “USD 97.680.000” including tax.[4]

Revista PLUS reported that the same contract covers the first division, the División Intermedia, the Copa Paraguay, women's football, Primera B, Primera C, futsal and beach football — that is, the association's whole competition programme rather than the top division alone.[3]

The association itself names the channel as the broadcaster of individual fixtures: its preview of an Olimpia–Cerro Porteño clásico at the ueno La Nueva Olla lists Tigo Sports as the transmitting service.[5] The operator's name is also carried by the competition itself, which the association's 2025 regulations title the Copa de Primera Tigo Ueno Bank.[6]

How large is Tigo Sports's audience?

No audited television audience measurement for Tigo Sports could be retrieved for this page, and no subscriber figure for the service was found in a source that was retrieved.

The figures that exist are the company's own and are about output rather than audience: Revista PLUS reported on 5 October 2023 that the service carries more than 1,000 transmissions a year and more than two matches a day across its channels and application.[3]

The rights fee is a measured commercial figure rather than an audience one, and it is dated: USD 97,680,000 including tax over four years to 2027, as stated by the football association's president on 4 October 2023 and reported the next day.[4] Versus published the internal distribution of the same contract, rising from US$ 1,550,000 per first-division club in the first year to US$ 1,800,000 in the fourth.[7]

Since when has Tigo Sports existed?

Two independent accounts date the channel to 2014. Newsline Report reported its launch on 27 January 2014, and La Nación's account of the operator's history, published on 1 September 2025, gives the same year.[2][1]

The operator is older than the channel, and the two dates are kept apart: the same account dates the company to 1992 under the name Telecel and the Tigo brand to 2004.[1]

The current rights period is a third date again. It began under an agreement announced on 4 October 2023 and runs to 2027, so it is a holding with a stated expiry.[4][3]

Why does Tigo Sports matter in Paraguay's sport?

Because the football association's principal commercial relationship runs through it, and the size and term of that relationship are on the record: four years to 2027 at a figure the association's own president put at USD 97,680,000 including tax.[4]

The contract's scope is what makes it structural rather than only financial. As reported by Revista PLUS it covers the two professional divisions, the Copa Paraguay, Primera B, Primera C, women's football, futsal and beach football, which is the association's whole programme; and the association's own competition regulations for 2025 carry the operator's name in the competition title.[3][6]

Because rights go stale, the date anchors are given rather than a present tense: the deal was announced on 4 October 2023, runs to 2027, and the per-club distribution Versus published rises across those four years.[7] The association separately names the service as the broadcaster of named fixtures.[5]
