What is The Voice?
The Voice is a Saint Lucian newspaper with a website at thevoiceslu.com. The site's footer reads “© 2024 The Voice Publishing Co. (1953) LTD, All rights reserved.”, and its page description reads “Providing quality news from St. Lucia since 1885.”[1]
Its article of 28 January 2026, marking 141 years, names Robert George McHugh as owner at the first issue, his wife Marie McHugh after his death in 1910, and George S.E. Gordon as acquirer in 1920, and describes Michael Gordon as “the current head of the organization”; that is the newspaper's own account.[2] No company register entry or regulator's record of the owner was retrieved.
Its sports reporting sits on a path of the same domain, thevoiceslu.com/category/sports/, beside news, editorial, opinion and features sections.[1]
What does The Voice cover?
As retrieved on 26 September 2026, the sports section's items from September 2026 were mainly football: the men's senior team's preparations for the Concacaf Nations League, Saint Lucia's hosting of Nations League matches, the Saint Lucia Football Association's senior women's competition, under-14 championships and women's league, a new technical director, a referees' course and young players selected for a FIFA under-15 festival.[5]
Cricket. On 23 September 2026 it reported the SLNCA Super 50 men's tournament: “Gros Islet continued their impressive unbeaten streak in the 2026 SLNCA Super 50 Championship with a commanding 190-run victory over Vieux Fort North”.[6] On 12 September 2026 it reported that the Saint Lucia Kings were on the verge of elimination from the Caribbean Premier League playoffs.[5]
Athletics and anti-doping. Its sports section on 12 September 2026 previewed Julien Alfred's race in Budapest.[5] On 14 March 2026 it reported the sports minister's statement that “The re-establishment of a fully functional National Anti-Doping Organization demonstrates Saint Lucia's commitment to international standards and fulfills our obligations under the World Anti-Doping Agency framework.”[7]
How large is The Voice's audience?
No audited circulation, readership or web-traffic figure for The Voice was retrieved, and no readership survey or web audit covering Saint Lucia was found. That is a limitation of the evidence.
The newspaper's own anniversary article of 28 January 2026 gives no circulation figure.[2] Traffic estimators are not audited measurement and are not used here.
Since when has The Voice existed?
The Voice's editorial of 23 March 2015 states: “THE VOICE OF ST. LUCIA, as it was known originally, first appeared on the scene of January 24, 1885.” The same piece states: “It is the oldest newspaper in the sub-region, and one of the oldest in the entire Caribbean.” Both are the newspaper's own claims.[3] Its anniversary article of 28 January 2026 repeats 24 January 1885 as the date of the first issue and names Robert George McHugh as its owner at the time.[2]
Findmypast, a newspaper archive, lists the Voice of St. Lucia, published in Castries, with an earliest held issue of 31 January 1885 and holdings to 20 December 1919, and names The Voice Publishing Co. as publisher.[4] The first issue date is given as the newspaper prints it and the earliest held issue as the archive prints it; neither is adopted.
Why does The Voice matter in Saint Lucia's sport?
The Voice reports Saint Lucia Football Association competitions at several levels, from under-14 boys to senior women, the national team in the Concacaf Nations League, and the island's club cricket through the SLNCA Super 50 tournament.[5][6] It has reported the government's statements on anti-doping policy.[7] By its own account and by Findmypast's holdings, its title runs back to 1885.[3][4]
Monitoring body. Freedom House, in Freedom in the World 2024, scores Saint Lucia 3 out of 4 on free and independent media and states that “press freedom is largely upheld in practice” and that “A number of private and independent news outlets carry content on a range of issues.” It names no outlet.[8] Its Freedom in the World 2026 edition also scores Saint Lucia 3 out of 4 on the indicator.[9]
