What is Telex?

Telex is a Hungarian general news site. Its imprint gives the publisher as Telex.hu Zrt. — which also publishes the economics site G7 — with Márton Kárpáti as responsible publisher (felelős kiadó).[1] It publishes at telex.hu and runs a daily sports section.

Its ownership is dated. Telex announced on 20 October 2023 that an employee share programme had been completed in which “a részvények 75%-a dolgozói részvény lett”, with the remaining quarter held as ordinary and preference shares by four of its founders — Szabolcs Dull, András Kárpáti, András Pusztay and Márton Kárpáti. That is the outlet's own account of its ownership, reported here as its claim.[6]

It was founded by journalists who left Index in July 2020 after the dismissal of that site's editor-in-chief; Index's own notice of 24 July 2020 recorded the departure of its editorial leadership and more than eighty staff.[2] Telex's fifth-birthday notice of 2 October 2025 dates its own launch to 2 October 2020.[3]

What does Telex cover?

Telex is a general news publisher whose sports desk works the same beats as the specialist press. On 14 July 2026 it reported the Magyar Labdarúgó-szövetség's broadcast tender for the NB I and NB II, naming the public media company as the winner and Network4 and AMC, the operator of Sport TV, as the other bidders, and noting that the federation had originally sought 8 billion forint for the rights.[4]

That report also carried the operative consequence for viewers in the outlet's own summary of the agreement: “a 2026-2027-es idényben is ingyenesen követhetők lesznek a magyar profi labdarúgás legfontosabb mérkőzései az M4 Sporton”.[4]

The sports material documented here sits at the intersection of sport and public money: which body awarded a set of rights, to whom, for how much, and what the losing bids were. That is the same ground the state-owned sports daily covers, reported by an outlet with a different funding arrangement.[4][5]

How large is Telex's audience?

No audited Hungarian digital-audience figure for telex.hu could be retrieved for this page. Hungarian online audience measurement is a separate currency from the Nielsen television panel that the regulator uses for channels, and no current audited figure for this outlet was obtained; traffic estimators are not audited measurement and are not used here.

What the outlet itself publishes is a support figure rather than an audience figure. Its transparency page, last updated in September 2026, states: “A Telexet az indulása óta közel 70 ezer ember támogatta alkalmi vagy rendszeres jelleggel”, and that “A Telex rendszeres támogatóinak 99,6 százaléka havonta maximum 15000 forinttal támogatja az újságot”.[5] Its fifth-birthday notice adds that close to 40,000 people directed their one-per-cent income-tax designation to it, worth more than 580 million forint, in the first year it was eligible to receive them.[3] Both are the outlet's own figures, reported here as its claims.

Since when has Telex existed?

Telex dates its launch to 2 October 2020, in a notice published on the fifth anniversary of that date.[3] The founding is separate from, and consequent on, the events at Index in July 2020: Index's own service notice of 24 July 2020 recorded that its lead editor and two deputy editors-in-chief were leaving, together with more than eighty staff, after the dismissal of editor-in-chief Szabolcs Dull, stating that they “nem látta tovább biztosítottnak a független működés alapvető feltételeit”.[2] That is Index's wording about its own staff, quoted and attributed rather than adopted.

The publishing company named on the current imprint is Telex.hu Zrt., which the imprint also gives as the publisher of the economics site G7.[1]

Three dates are therefore distinct for this outlet: the July 2020 departures at Index, which are Index's own recorded event;[2] the launch of Telex on 2 October 2020;[3] and the running arrangements described on the transparency page as last updated in September 2026.[5] The first is not the founding date of the second.

Why does Telex matter in Hungary's sport?

Telex is one of the outlets that reports the commercial and institutional side of Hungarian sport from outside the state-owned sports press. Its account of the July 2026 football rights tender carried details the winning bid's own coverage did not foreground — the federation's original asking price and the identity of the losing bidders.[4]

Its funding arrangement is documented and unusual in the market: the outlet states that it is carried by reader support, and publishes supporter counts and the distribution of contribution sizes on its own transparency page.[5] Those are its own published figures; no external audit of them was retrieved.

For sport specifically, the value to a reader is a second, independently funded account of the same rights, financing and governance stories that the specialist press covers.
