What is Суспільне Спорт?
Суспільне Спорт is the sports television channel and the sports service of Ukraine's public broadcaster. The broadcaster's corporate site lists it among the company's television channels alongside Перший, Суспільне Культура and a national network of local channels, with Українське Радіо, Радіо Культура, Радіо Промінь and Радіоточка on the radio side and Суспільне Новини, Суспільне Медіатека and Суспільне Євробачення among its digital platforms.[1]
The operator gives its own legal form as the joint-stock company АТ «Національна суспільна телерадіокомпанія України», and describes itself in its own words as belonging to Ukrainian society and accountable only to it: "Захищаємо свободи в Україні — належимо українському суспільству й підзвітні лише йому".[1] That is the company's own characterisation of itself and is reported here as such. Its statutory position is set out separately. Law of Ukraine No. 1227-VII of 17 April 2014, in the edition published by the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine as amended by Law No. 271-VIII of 19 March 2015, provides at Article 1 that alienation, transfer other than short-term lease, and privatisation of the company's immovable property and of the shares belonging to the state in its statutory capital «забороняється» — is prohibited.[2]
The sports service also states of itself that it is publicly owned, financed from citizens' taxes and does not publish advertising.[3]
What does Суспільне Спорт cover?
The service's published output is national and international in roughly equal measure. Its sports pages carry the Ukrainian Premier League, including a fixture calendar and standings for the domestic championship, and the Ukrainian Cup; European and world championships in volleyball and athletics; the Olympic Games; rounds of the biathlon World Cup; tennis on the WTA and ATP tours; boxing; and basketball.[3]
Coverage is organised by sport rather than by competition, with standing sections for football, athletics, volleyball, tennis, basketball, boxing and winter sports, and it combines live streaming of the television channel with written match reports and results.[3]
Ukrainian broadcasters have operated since March 2022 under a unified arrangement whose instrument is public. Presidential Decree No. 152/2022 of 19 March 2022 gave effect to a National Security and Defence Council decision of 18 March 2022 on the implementation of a unified information policy under martial law, to be achieved by uniting the national television channels whose programming consists mainly of informational and analytical broadcasting on a single strategic communications platform, the round-the-clock information marathon «Єдині новини #UAразом».[4] The arrangement is directed at the national news channels; the sports service continues to publish its own schedule and its own written coverage.
A named body has published on that arrangement. In the words of a Ukrainian trade report of the European Union's Joint Position on Cluster 1 «Fundamentals», opened on 15 June 2026, the Union called on Ukraine to "continue strengthening a transparent, pluralistic and independent media landscape, including through review and gradual phasing out of the 'United News' telethon", to "ensure the full independence of the media regulator", and to implement media reform "to reduce the risk of monopolistic or oligarchic structures re-emerging".[5]
How large is Суспільне Спорт's audience?
No audited audience figure specific to the sports channel or to its online sports service could be retrieved for this page.
The measurement currency for Ukrainian television is a panel commissioned through the industry rather than a broadcaster's own count, and the panel then in use was Nielsen's. A trade report published on 9 September 2026 records that it covered only settlements of 50,000 inhabitants and above, and that the market was publicly discussing what should replace the arrangement, who should conduct the measurement and who should fund it, participants in that discussion citing cost, technology and what one of them called the realities of electricity supply and of population displacement.[6] That is a limitation of the available evidence rather than of the broadcaster.
Traffic estimates produced by commercial tools are not audited measurement and none is given here.
Since when has Суспільне Спорт existed?
Three dates have to be kept apart: the statute, the company, and the channel.
The statute came first. Ukraine's public broadcaster was created under Law No. 1227-VII, adopted on 17 April 2014, and the account published by Українське Радіо records that the legal entity was registered as a public joint-stock company on 19 January 2017, with a statutory capital of 2.54 billion hryvnias and the shares held by the state.[7]
The registration is separately documented by the trade press: on 19 January 2017 the public joint-stock company Національна суспільна телерадіокомпанія України was entered in the register, and the legal entity of the predecessor state broadcaster НТКУ was terminated on the same date.[8]
The sports channel itself is a later product of that company, and no date for its launch is given on the corporate site read for this page.[1]
Why does Суспільне Спорт matter in Ukraine's sport?
It is the point at which domestic competition reaches a national free-to-air audience. Its sports pages carry the Ukrainian Premier League season alongside the Ukrainian Cup and international football, which places the domestic championship on a public-service platform in parallel with the league's own subscription pool.[3] How competition rights are sold generally is set out at broadcast rights.
Its second function is institutional. Because the law prohibits alienation of the shares the state holds in the operating company, and because the company states that it is accountable to society rather than to shareholders, it sits outside the ownership questions that attach to commercially held Ukrainian media.[7] Both propositions are reported here as the statute and the company state them.
Its third function is continuity. The unified wartime broadcast arrangement introduced by decree in March 2022 reorganised national news television around a single marathon,[4] and through that period the broadcaster has continued to run a separate sports channel and a separately published sports service.[3]
