What is Starnieuws?

Starnieuws is an online news service. Its colofon names the publisher as “Network Star Suriname NV”, the editor-in-chief as Nita Ramcharan, and, under sport, Edgar van Genderen.[2] Its footer reads “© Network Star Suriname (NSS). Alle rechten voorbehouden.”[1] The colofon gives no address and no ownership detail beyond the publisher's name.[2]

What does Starnieuws cover?

The sport section. As retrieved on 26 September 2026, the sport section's items from August and September 2026 included the national team's match in Honduras, Broki's matches in the Concacaf Caribbean Cup, Surinamese players at draughts tournaments in Tobago and elsewhere, and Suriname's team for the South American Games; one item concerned Lionel Messi.[3]

The national team. Starnieuws reported on 26 September 2026 that Suriname beat Honduras 3-2 at the Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés in Tegucigalpa, in “groep B van League A van de Concacaf Nations League”, in the first official match with Henk Fraser as national coach.[4]

Multi-sport Games. The Games were in their final day on 26 September 2026.

Club football. Its item of 20 August 2026 was headed “Broki verliest ook van Defense Force in Concacaf Caribbean Cup”, and its item of 2 September reported Broki's elimination from that competition after a goalless draw.[3]

Broadcast rights. Starnieuws reported on 13 May 2026 that STVS had been confirmed as exclusive licence holder and broadcaster of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for Suriname. The same report set out the terms STVS announced for others: “Voor nieuwsdoeleinden geldt een beperkte uitzondering van maximaal vijftien seconden aan WK-beelden.” That is, news use was limited to a maximum of fifteen seconds of World Cup footage.[6]

Sport and nationality law. On 7 September 2026, the day before the vote in De Nationale Assemblée, it reported that the initiators of the amendment to the Surinamerschapwet had changed their proposal: “De bijzondere regeling voor het verkrijgen van de Surinaamse nationaliteit geldt niet langer uitsluitend voor topsporters van Surinaamse origine, maar wordt uitgebreid naar personen met buitengewone verdiensten op wetenschappelijk of sportief gebied.” That report describes the proposal before the debate.[8]

How large is Starnieuws's audience?

No television-audience currency, readership survey or audited web measurement for Suriname was retrieved, so no audience figure is given. The colofon publishes no audience figure, and no traffic figure is reported here.[2]

Reporters Without Borders' 2026 entry for Suriname states that “The country enjoys a pluralist media landscape.” It does not name Starnieuws.[7]

Since when has Starnieuws existed?

The colofon gives no founding date, and no founding date for Starnieuws or for Network Star Suriname NV was retrieved from another source.[2]

Why does Starnieuws matter in Suriname's sport?

Starnieuws names a sports reporter in its colofon and runs a sport section that, on the date retrieved, reported the national football team's Nations League match, a Surinamese club's matches in a regional Concacaf competition, Surinamese players in international draughts, and Suriname's team for the South American Games.[2][3]

Its reports of May 2026 recorded the arrangements under which the 2026 FIFA World Cup was shown in Suriname, including STVS's statement that it remained the central rights holder and Telesur's sublicence for ATV.[6] Its report of 3 September 2026 quotes the Surinaams Olympisch Comité as saying that it looked forward with confidence to the performances of Team Suriname.[5]
