What is Starcom Network?

Starcom Network is a Barbadian radio operator. Its own About page states that “Barbados Rediffusion Services Ltd. changed its name and image and became STARCOM Network Inc.” on “Friday November 27, 1999”, and that the company was acquired by “the Nation Corporation” in “September 1979”.[1] Those are the operator's statements about itself, attributed here and not adopted.

One Caribbean Media Limited's own history page places the operator inside its group, stating that “Nation Corporation is the parent company of the Nation Publishing Company Limited and Starcom Network Incorporated”, and that Starcom “operates the leading FM radio stations in Barbados, namely Voice of Barbados (VOB) 92.9 FM, Hott 95.3 FM, The Beat 104.1 FM and Life 97.5 FM”.[2] That characterisation is the group's, quoted and attributed; this page does not adopt it. The group's ownership statement is current to the page as retrieved on 23 September 2026.

Radio in Barbados is licensed under the general statute rather than a broadcaster-specific one: the index of the Statutes of Barbados lists Broadcasting at Cap. 274B and Telecommunications at Cap. 282B.[3]

What does Starcom Network cover?

The operator's stations are general-service rather than sport-only. Its own page for Voice of Barbados 92.9 FM describes the station as a news and current-affairs service and names its programmes, among them the call-in programme “Down to Brasstacks”, “Around VOB Country”, “Your Choice” and “Fireworks”.[4]

Sport sits inside that schedule. The station's own site lists two sport programmes by name, Penalty Spot and Extra Time.[5] Its own page records the frequency history, giving 92.9 FM as the station formerly on 790 AM.[4][5]

The operator's About page dates each station's launch: Voice of Barbados on 1 May 1981, YESS 104.1 FM — now The Beat 104.1 FM — on 30 May 1988, HOTT 95.3 FM on 1 December 1997, and LIFE 97.5 on 11 August 2013.[1] No broadcast-rights agreement held by the operator for any sport competition could be retrieved for this page, and none is claimed here.

How large is Starcom Network's audience?

No audited radio audience currency for Barbados could be retrieved for this page, and the operator publishes no audience figure on the pages retrieved.[1][4] Traffic estimators are not audited measurement and no figure from one is given here.

Reach can be given structurally rather than by measurement. The operator and its parent group both name four FM stations — Voice of Barbados 92.9 FM, HOTT 95.3 FM, The Beat 104.1 FM and Life 97.5 FM — operating across a single national market.[1][2] One Caribbean Media characterises them as “the leading FM radio stations in Barbados”, a claim by the parent about its own subsidiary and quoted as such.[2]

On the environment, Freedom House's Freedom in the World 2026 edition scores Barbados 94 out of 100 overall with a status of Free, and 4 out of 4 on indicator D1, free and independent media.[6]

Since when has Starcom Network existed?

The operator gives two dates for two different things, and they should be kept apart. It states that the company was acquired by the Nation Corporation in September 1979, and that it took the name STARCOM Network Inc. on Friday 27 November 1999, having previously been Barbados Rediffusion Services Ltd.[1] A renaming is not a founding, and the operator's pages retrieved for this page give no date for the founding of the predecessor company.

The station launch dates it publishes are later than the company: Voice of Barbados on 1 May 1981, YESS 104.1 FM on 30 May 1988, HOTT 95.3 FM on 1 December 1997 and LIFE 97.5 on 11 August 2013.[1]

That the operator is currently active is established by its own live station pages and streams, retrieved on 23 September 2026, and by One Caribbean Media's group page naming it among the group's companies.[4][2]

Why does Starcom Network matter in Barbados's sport?

It is the radio side of the same corporate structure as the Nation newspaper title. One Caribbean Media Limited's own account places Nation Publishing Company Limited and Starcom Network Incorporated under the same parent, the Nation Corporation — four FM stations and a newspaper publisher in one group.[2] That is a fact about ownership, stated by the owner, and it is a structural feature of how Barbadian sport reaches audiences.

Its sport output is named and schedulable rather than incidental: the Voice of Barbados site lists Penalty Spot and Extra Time among the station's programmes.[5] The station's own description of itself is as a news and current-affairs service, within which those programmes sit.[4]

The operator's own corporate record is unusually dated for a small market, giving a renaming date, an acquisition month and four separate station launch dates, which allows claims about it to be anchored rather than left in the present tense.[1] Radio operates under the general Broadcasting Act at Cap. 274B of the Statutes of Barbados rather than a chapter of its own.[3] Freedom House's Freedom in the World 2026 edition scores Barbados 94 out of 100 and 4 out of 4 on free and independent media.[6]
