What is Šport.sk?
Šport.sk is a Slovak sports website. It is owned by Ringier Slovakia Media s.r.o., the Slovak arm of the Ringier group, and is presented within Ringier Sports Media Group, the group's sports division.[1][2] The owner gives two different starting dates for the site, and they do not agree: Ringier's Slovak history page lists Sport.sk among the sites the company launched in 2005, while Ringier Sports Media Group's brand page says “since its creation in 2017”.[8][1]
The ownership is dated. Ringier announced on 11 January 2024 that Ringier Slovakia Media s.r.o. had acquired the one-third minority stake held by Šport Press — the publisher of the Slovak sports daily — and had become the portal's sole owner.[2] Forbes Slovensko reported the transaction independently that day, naming the Berger family as the owners of Šport Press.[9] The Ringier release also states that the acquisition brought the site into the group's editorial system, Sportal 365.[2]
Ringier's position in the Slovak market is described by the Euromedia Ownership Monitor, whose 2025 Slovakia report says of foreign media groups in Slovakia, Ringier among them, that “these groups' ownership disclosures tend to be clearer due to their corporate structure”.[3] That is the monitor's assessment, quoted and attributed.
What does Šport.sk cover?
The site is a general Slovak sports site rather than a single-sport title. Ringier Sports Media Group's own brand page describes it as covering Slovak sport across disciplines and states that more than 3,700 pieces of content are published on it a month.[1] Those are the operator's figures for its own product.
The subject matter of Slovak general sports coverage is set by the two leagues with the largest gates — the Niké liga in football, whose own published 2025/26 season total was 584,149 spectators across 194 matches, and the Tipos extraliga in ice hockey — together with the Olympic disciplines in which the country holds its medals.[4]
The January 2024 release ties the site's editorial direction to the group's wider sports strategy, including video formats, and states that Ringier Sports Media Group operates ten brands in eight European countries.[2]
How large is Šport.sk's audience?
The only per-site figures retrieved are the operator's own. Ringier Sports Media Group's brand page for Šport.sk gives 32 million page views a month and more than 3,700 content items a month, and names no measurement source for either.[1] The January 2024 releases give group-level figures — 300 million sports fans a month across ten brands in eight countries, more than 200 journalists, more than 1,000 content items a day — again without naming an external measurement source.[2] These are the company's claims about itself.
The recognised online measurement in Slovakia is the joint industry research run through IAB Slovakia. Its annual report for 2025 gives an internet population aged 12 and over of 3.7 million and 3.1 million monthly visitors to the sites in the research, and puts the publisher Ringier Slovakia Media at 2.8 million monthly reach across its portfolio, with aktuality.sk the largest single site at 2.5 million monthly visitors.[5] That report carries no separate figure for sport.sk. From 1 April 2026 the research is operated by Gemius Slovakia as gemiusAudience, in succession to IABmonitor.[6] No audited per-domain figure for sport.sk could be retrieved for this page.
Since when has Šport.sk existed?
Ringier's own two accounts disagree. Its Slovak history page puts the launch in 2005, listing Sport.sk with Aktuality.sk among the sites the company started that year; Ringier Sports Media Group's brand page for the site says “since its creation in 2017”.[8][1] Both are the owner's own statements and no independent founding date was retrieved for this page.
The ownership dates are firmer. Before 11 January 2024 the site was held jointly, with Šport Press holding a one-third minority stake; on that date Ringier announced that Ringier Slovakia Media s.r.o. had bought that stake and become sole owner.[2]
Why does Šport.sk matter in Slovakia's sport?
The site is the sports title of the publisher that the Slovak joint industry research puts at the largest monthly reach of any Slovak digital publisher, 2.8 million, in its 2025 annual report.[5] That figure is for the publisher's whole portfolio, not for this site.
Its ownership is also one of the documented cases in the Slovak ownership debate. The Euromedia Ownership Monitor's Slovakia report for 2025, by Ivan Godársky and Marek Mračka of MEMO 98, sets Ringier against the domestic groups — PPF Group and CME, Penta Investments and News and Media Holding, and the JOJ Group — and describes a “clear dual structure” carrying “structural risks of instrumentalisation and conflicts of interest”.[3] The Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom's Media Pluralism Monitor 2026 puts Slovakia's market plurality risk at 69 per cent and states that “Slovakia faces high levels of media ownership concentration, with the top four owners controlling over 60% of the audience in the newspaper, TV, and radio sectors”.[7]
