What is Sport-Express?
Sport-Express — Спорт-Экспресс — is a Russian sports daily published in Moscow. Its website carries the strapline «новости спорта, футбол, хоккей, биатлон, спортивная аналитика и интервью»: sports news, football, hockey, biathlon, sports analysis and interviews. The front page retrieved on 20 September 2026 was timestamped through 19 and 20 September 2026, so the title was publishing on that date.[1]
Kommersant's dossier on the paper records that it was set up in 1991 by fourteen journalists who left Советский спорт, with Vladimir Kuchmiy as editor-in-chief and Ivan Rubin as general director, and that both became its principal shareholders.[2] The same dossier records that the French group Éditions Philippe Amaury, publisher of L'Équipe, controlled the title from 1993 to 1996, and that after Kuchmiy died on 21 March 2009 his holding passed to three heirs and to Rubin, whom the dossier then records as the principal shareholder.[2] Those are dated positions, not the present one: no current shareholding or publisher filing for the title could be retrieved, and the imprint pages on the outlet's own site could not be retrieved.
What does Sport-Express cover?
The front page retrieved on 20 September 2026 was built around football, running from the Russian Premier League to the Champions League, La Liga, Serie A, the English Premier League, Ligue 1 and the Turkish Süper Lig. Alongside it sat hockey from the Kontinental Hockey League and the NHL, combat sport under MMA and UFC headings, tennis and figure skating.[1]
The same page carried match centres, live coverage, video reports, photo galleries, reader polls and a betting-prediction section, so the site is a live-results service as well as a reporting one.[1]
Medialogia classifies Спорт-Экспресс under its newspaper category and sport-express.ru separately under internet media, which is how the title's two outputs are counted in that rating.[3] Reporting the title's thirty-fifth anniversary on 14 August 2026, the television channel Pyaty Kanal quoted the writer Igor Rabiner on what the paper changed in Russian sports journalism: «Это была настоящая революция. Всё, что происходило вчера, должно было быть в газете сегодня.» — “This was a genuine revolution. Everything that happened yesterday had to be in the newspaper today.” That is Rabiner's characterisation, reported by the channel.[4]
How large is Sport-Express's audience?
No audited circulation figure and no audited online audience figure for the title could be retrieved. Mediascope, whose WEB-Index is the measurement the Russian market uses for internet resources, publishes an interactive dashboard but issues its detailed reports to project subscribers, and the dashboard could not be retrieved; Mediascope states that its internet data covers the population aged twelve and over.[5] The figures available for the domain come from traffic-estimation services, which are not audited measurement.
What can be dated is historical. Kommersant's dossier records a declared circulation of 650,000 copies in 2003, third among Russian dailies at that time; an average readership per issue of about 509,000 for the 2012 reporting period; printing in 30 places and distribution in 262 cities in Russia and abroad; and a combined Moscow and St Petersburg circulation of 80,000 copies. The same dossier records annual losses from 2007, reaching 107.4 million roubles in 2011, and a wage dispute in August 2012.[2] Those figures are more than a decade old and are given with their dates rather than as the present position.
For current pick-up rather than audience, Medialogia's sectoral rating of sports media for 1 April to 30 June 2026 places Спорт-Экспресс second of twenty entries with a citation index of 2,493.45 and sport-express.ru fifteenth at 65.16. Medialogia states that the index draws on more than 111,000 sources and that an algorithm excludes systematic and anomalous mutual cross-citation. This counts how often other media quote the outlet, not how many people read it.[3]
Since when has Sport-Express existed?
Kommersant's dossier gives the first issue as 14 August 1991: «Первый номер “СЭ” вышел 14 августа 1991 года».[2] Pyaty Kanal reported on 14 August 2026 that the title was marking thirty-five years since its founding in August 1991, which is consistent with that date and establishes that the paper was still being published then.[4]
The founding is a departure rather than a beginning from nothing: both sources describe the paper as started by journalists who left Советский спорт, a title whose own origins run back to 1922. The two mastheads are separate publications and their dates should not be merged.[2][4]
The printed edition has continued. The newspaper archive on the outlet's own site carries issue No. 127 (9699) dated 14 July 2026, and a report of 26 February 2026 quoted Maximov of Спорт-Экспресс as saying the title did not plan to close its printed run — a statement made in the month in which the daily printed edition of Советский спорт was reported to be ending.[6][7]
When the paper's website was established, and the registration particulars of its network edition, could not be retrieved; the imprint pages on the outlet's own site returned an error to every retrieval attempted.
Why does Sport-Express matter in Russia's sport?
The measured evidence for the title's standing is pick-up by other media: a citation index of 2,493.45 in Medialogia's sports-sector rating for the second quarter of 2026, behind Матч ТВ at 4,362.94 and ahead of Championat.com at 2,256.64 and Советский спорт at 1,110.01.[3]
Its second documented feature is scope. The front page couples domestic football and hockey with the five large European football leagues, UFC, tennis and figure skating, and pairs reporting with live match centres — so the same masthead serves as a results service and as a reporting desk.[1]
Its third is longevity through a change of publishing model. Founded as a print daily in August 1991 and owned for three years in the 1990s by the publisher of L'Équipe, the title was still marking anniversaries and publishing continuously online in 2026.[2][4][1]
