What is Sport?
Sport is a Spanish daily sports newspaper published in Barcelona, which also runs a website at sport.es. An account of the title's history records that it was started in Barcelona by the journalist Josep Maria Casanovas, who came from Grupo Mundo, and that for decades it was published by "Ediciones Deportivas Catalanas, S.A., dentro del Grupo Zeta".[1]
Its present owner is Prensa Ibérica. The same account states: "En 2019, tras la adquisición de Grupo Zeta por Prensa Ibérica, SPORT se integró en este grupo manteniendo su base en Barcelona."[1] That is one dated ownership change with a named acquirer, and it is the only one recorded in the source retrieved; Prensa Ibérica's own corporate pages could not be retrieved, so the group's description of the title is not quoted here.
The paper's own website could not be retrieved either, so its masthead, current director and statement of editorial principles are not given below, and no self-description by Sport is adopted.
What does Sport cover?
Sport is one of the four titles the Spanish measurement series treat as national sports dailies. The Estudio General de Medios carries it in the newspaper table with Marca, AS and Mundo Deportivo.[3][4] Comscore's State of Sports 2025 España report, as reported on 19 November 2025, counted sport.es among the Spanish sports digital properties it measured, with marca.com, as.com, mundodeportivo.com and relevo.com.[5]
It is the second of the two Barcelona-based national sports dailies, the other being Mundo Deportivo, and it kept that base through the 2019 change of owner.[1] A 2013 study of the Spanish sports press by Clara Sainz de Baranda Andújar in Materiales para la Historia del Deporte examines the Spanish sports dailies as a group, of which Sport is one, and describes El Mundo Deportivo as the oldest of them.[2]
A current section-by-section account of what Sport publishes — its desks, supplements and digital verticals — could not be sourced, because neither the paper's own site nor its publisher's corporate pages could be retrieved, and none is offered here.
How large is Sport's audience?
For the printed paper, the Estudio General de Medios recorded Sport at 177,000 readers a day in its second wave of 2026, whose fieldwork is reported as running from 19 March to 3 June 2026. That was the smallest of the four sports-daily figures in the table, against 881,000 for Marca, 369,000 for AS and 276,000 for Mundo Deportivo, and the account records it as down on the preceding wave.[3]
In the first wave of 2026, reported on 15 April 2026, Sport was recorded as falling 4.41 per cent, but the account retrieved did not state the underlying figure, so no number is given here for that wave.[4]
These are survey readership estimates. No audited circulation figure from OJD/Introl could be retrieved for Sport, and none is stated.
For the website, the account of Comscore's State of Sports 2025 España report published on 19 November 2025 reported the remaining Spanish sports properties — sport.es, mundodeportivo.com and relevo.com — as falling between 14.1 million and 8.9 million users, without giving a figure for any of them individually, so no single digital audience figure for sport.es can be stated from that source, and no other current digital measurement for the site could be retrieved.[5] That is a limitation of the available evidence rather than an absence of measurement.
Since when has Sport existed?
The founding date is precise and is recorded as the date of the first issue on sale: "El primer ejemplar se publicó en los quioscos el 3 de noviembre de 1979."[1] The paper was started by Josep Maria Casanovas, a journalist who had come from Grupo Mundo, and was published in Barcelona.[1]
The publishing company and the owning group are separate matters with their own dates. The title was published for decades by Ediciones Deportivas Catalanas, S.A., which sat within Grupo Zeta; the account retrieved does not date the start of that arrangement.[1] The change of group is dated to 2019, when Prensa Ibérica acquired Grupo Zeta and Sport passed with it.[1]
Founded 1979, published through Ediciones Deportivas Catalanas within Grupo Zeta, and in Prensa Ibérica since 2019: three distinct facts, none of them a restatement of another. The exact date within 2019 of the acquisition, and the terms of it, could not be retrieved and are not stated.
Why does Sport matter in Spain's sport?
Sport is one of only four titles that the Spanish readership and digital measurement series treat as national sports dailies, and it appears in both.[3][5] That is a structural point about a small field rather than a claim about the paper's influence: the Estudio General de Medios lists four such titles, and Comscore's 2025 sports report measured five Spanish sports properties, the fifth being the digital-only Relevo.[5]
It is also one of the two of those four published in Barcelona rather than Madrid, and it kept that base when it changed groups in 2019.[1] A 2013 academic study of the Spanish sports press treats the group of dailies as the unit of analysis, which is the frame within which Sport's position is best described.[2]
Its measured readership of 177,000 a day in the EGM's second 2026 wave is the smallest of the four, and it fell in both 2026 waves for which figures or percentage changes could be retrieved.[3][4] The competitions it reports on are described elsewhere on this site under LaLiga and Liga Endesa, and the national picture under sport in Spain.
