What is Sport 890?
Sport 890 is a Montevideo radio station broadcasting on 890 AM and describing itself on its own site as “La radio deportiva del Uruguay”.[1] The site carries a live stream, a mobile application, a “Volvé a escuchar” replay feature and a “Programación” schedule.[1]
Its published weekday schedule opens at 05:00 and 06:00 with two programmes credited to Sarandí 690 AM, Dinámica Rural and Es Noticia, before the station's own output begins; the schedule also lists weekend blocks without naming their contents.[2] That shared opening is the only relationship with another station that the schedule itself discloses.[2]
No ownership statement, no licence detail and no corporate name could be retrieved from the station's own site, and none is asserted here. The site's public-facing material is the frequency, the schedule and the stream.[1]
What does Sport 890 cover?
The schedule is the clearest statement of the remit, and it is football-led without being football-only. From 07:30 the station runs Apertura Sport with Rodrigo Vázquez; from 08:00 100% Deporte with Roberto Moar, Diego Jokas, Marcelo Sanzó, Rodrigo Vázquez, Darío Alberti and Jorge Parieti; from 10:00 ¿Usted qué opina? with Sergio Gorzy, Rodrigo Vázquez, Marcelo Sanzó and Guillermo López; and from 13:00 Quiero Fútbol with Mauro Mas, Rodrigo Vázquez and Nicolás Pirri.[2]
A separate daily hour is given to basketball: Puro Básquetbol at 12:00, with Diego Jokas, Juan Pablo Tamborini, Martín Frydman and Darío Alberti.[2] The afternoon carries Último al Arco from 15:00, Sport Noticias from 17:00 and Sport & Show from 18:00, with live events from 20:00.[2]
How large is Sport 890's audience?
Radio audience in Uruguay is measured by the consultancy Factum for the Buró de Radios, and El Observador published its figures on 4 November 2025. On a “promedio semanal de lunes a domingo”, Sport 890 recorded 0.36 rating points and 4,938 listeners, against 0.43 points and 5,899 listeners for El Espectador Deportes and 0.19 points and 2,606 for Carve Deportiva, on a scale on which one rating point corresponds to 13,719 people.[3]
Three things about that figure need stating with it. It is a weekly average taken Monday to Sunday and not a single day's reading; the report does not state which weeks or months were measured; and it compares the three stations in the report rather than all Uruguayan radio.[3] The report describes 2025 as the first year in which three sports stations competed on the dial, which is why a like-for-like comparison exists at all.[3]
It is also a different currency from the one used for television in Uruguay, which is Kantar Ibope Media, and the two sets of figures are measured on different panels and different bases; nothing here converts one into the other.[4]
Since when has Sport 890 existed?
No founding date for Sport 890 could be retrieved from the station's own site or from another source read for this page, and none is asserted.[1] The station's site gives its frequency and its current schedule but no institutional history.[1][2]
The dated evidence that it was operating is the measurement itself. El Observador's report of 4 November 2025 describes the first year in which three sports stations competed on the dial and gives figures for each, which places Sport 890 on air through that period.[3]
Why does Sport 890 matter in Uruguay's sport?
It matters because it is one of only three sports radio stations for which an audited Uruguayan measurement has been published, which makes its audience a checkable figure rather than a claim.[3] The comparison that report sets out — three dedicated sports stations measured against one another for the first time — is itself the reason the figures exist.[3]
It also matters that the schedule gives a standing daily hour to basketball rather than to football alone.[2] Basketball is one of the eight disciplines on Uruguay's national school games programme and the sport in which Olympedia credits Uruguay with two Olympic bronze medals, so a daily basketball programme is a carriage proxy for a sport with a documented national position.[2]
On ownership and concentration, the named monitoring body is OBSERVACOM, whose study reported on 10 December 2017 examines “los tres grandes grupos mediáticos del país formados en torno a los canales de TV comerciales de Montevideo”, naming the Villar/De Feo, Romay and Cardoso/Scheck groups.[5] That passage concerns commercial television groups; it does not name this station, and no ownership finding about Sport 890 is drawn from it.[5]
