What is Sky Sports?
Sky Sports is the sport division of Sky, carried as a group of subscription television channels and as the website at skysports.com. Sky Group states on its own corporate site that "Sky is owned by Comcast Corporation, a global media and technology company" and that it serves customers "in the UK, Ireland and Italy" [1].
That ownership is dated. Comcast announced on 9 October 2018 that it had acquired the Sky shares held by 21st Century Fox and had become the owner of "more than 75% percent of Sky’s issued ordinary share capital" [2]. Sky’s then chief executive Jeremy Darroch is quoted in that announcement saying that "Comcast have committed to investment in Sky, including our Osterley and European headquarters" [2].
Sky’s own packages page lists nine Sky Sports channels: Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Premier League, Sky Sports Football, Sky Sports F1, Sky Sports Cricket, Sky Sports Golf, Sky Sports Tennis, Sky Sports Action and Sky Sports+ [5].
What does Sky Sports cover?
The Premier League is the anchor. The league announced on 4 December 2023 that it had completed the sale of its UK live rights for the four seasons from 2025-26 to 2028-29 for £6.7 billion, and that Sky had been awarded packages B, C, D and E, "a minimum of 215 live matches per season", including weekend matches, Friday and Monday evening fixtures and "all 10 matches on the final day of each season" [4]. Sky’s own announcement of the same deal, issued through Comcast on the same date, describes "at least 215 live games each season" and notes the four packages awarded [3].
The same December 2023 announcement sets out the rest of the portfolio with end dates attached: every Formula 1 "practice, qualifying and race until the end of 2029"; England and Wales Cricket Board "home men’s and women’s international cricket" to "the end of 2028"; "all men’s and women’s ICC world events through to the end of 2031"; an increase in Scottish Professional Football League matches "through to 2029"; English Football League coverage "increasing to over 1,000 matches each season from 2024/25"; "year-round tennis from both the ATP and WTA Tours for the next five years, plus the US Open until 2028"; and "every Betfred Super League match live for the first time from 2024–2026" [3].
Sky’s consumer page adds the sports carried without stating contract terms: golf including the majors and the BMW PGA Championship, boxing, darts, the NFL, netball, MotoGP, UFC, MLB, Serie A, the Women’s Super League and the Scottish Premiership [5]. Rights terms move, and the dated claims above are the ones with a stated end date.
How large is Sky Sports' audience?
The most recent sport-specific digital measurement retrieved is Ipsos iris data for May 2023, reported by Press Gazette, which placed Sky Sports first among UK sports news websites on 6.9 million monthly visitors and 14 per cent reach, ahead of Sportbible on 2.6 million and ESPN on 2.4 million [6]. That reading is more than three years old at the date of writing and is given with its date for that reason.
At owner level the measurement is current. Press Gazette, reporting Ipsos iris for April 2026, put Sky on 29.4 million monthly UK online reach, up 1.0 per cent year on year, third among UK website owners behind the BBC on 42.6 million and Reach on about 34 million [7]. That figure covers all Sky sites, not Sky Sports alone.
No subscriber figure for Sky Sports could be retrieved: Sky Group’s own about page gives no customer numbers [1], and no audited subscription total was found in the sources retrieved for this page. Television audiences in the United Kingdom are measured by BARB, and no BARB figure specific to the Sky Sports channels was retrieved either.
Since when has Sky Sports existed?
Sky Group states on its corporate site that it has been "believing in better for over 35 years", which places the business before 1991 without dating the sport channels [1]. A launch date for the Sky Sports brand could not be established from a primary source retrieved for this page and is not asserted here.
The ownership history is dated. Comcast became the holder of more than 75 per cent of Sky’s ordinary shares on 9 October 2018 [2], and Sky Group states that Sky is owned by Comcast [1]. Acquisition and founding are separate events, and only the acquisition has a source here.
The rights position is dated as well, and that is the more useful anchor for a reader checking whether a claim is still live. The current Premier League cycle was awarded on 4 December 2023 and runs from the 2025-26 season to the 2028-29 season [4]; the 2026-27 season was under way at the date of writing.
Why does Sky Sports matter in the United Kingdom's sport?
The measurable reason is volume of live rights held at once under dated contracts. In the 2025-26 to 2028-29 Premier League cycle Sky holds four of the five UK live packages and a minimum of 215 matches a season out of the 380 played, the largest single allocation in a process the league valued at £6.7 billion [4]. Alongside it sit Formula 1 to the end of 2029, England home international cricket to the end of 2028 and ICC world events to the end of 2031 [3].
The commercial model is the structural contrast with the free-to-air broadcasters: Sky Sports is sold as a subscription package of nine channels [5], and the free-to-air element of Premier League coverage — highlights and radio — was sold separately in the same process [4].
On digital measurement Sky Sports was the highest-ranked UK sports news site in the Ipsos iris data for May 2023 reported by Press Gazette, on 6.9 million monthly visitors [6]; several general news publishers’ sport desks are absent from that ranking because their sport sections have no standalone URL [6], so the ranking is a comparison of measured sites rather than of all sport journalism.
