What is RMC?

RMC is a French national radio station, broadcast over the air and online. The Autorité de la concurrence, clearing the acquisition of Altice Media by CMA CGM under decision 24-DCC-141 of 28 June 2024, set out the perimeter it was examining: the free-to-air channels BFM TV, RMC Découverte and RMC Story, ten local channels, the pay channel BFM Business TV, and « national radio stations broadcast over the air (RMC and BFM Business) and online (BFM Radio) », together with the associated news websites.[2] The same decision records that « pay-TV channels RMC Sport 1 and 2 are not included in the scope of the transaction ».[2]

Two years later the group moved on those channels as well. Trade reports dated 4 and 5 June 2026 state that CMA Media announced it was finalising the purchase of RMC Sport from Altice, reuniting the pay sports channels with the radio and television brands under one owner; the group's stated reason was to build subscription and advertising revenue around sport.[3][4] The station and the pay channels share the RMC name and, on those reports, an owner, but they are separate services.

What does RMC cover?

The regulator classifies RMC as a national general-interest radio station rather than a sports station, and it is grouped in the competition decision with BFM Business as national radio rather than with the sports channels.[2] A programme-by-programme description of the station's sports output could not be retrieved from a source open to retrieval here, and none is given.

What is documented is the sports business built around the brand. The RMC Sport pay channels carry combat sport: the reports of June 2026 describe their programming as centred on combat sports, with a mixed martial arts contract with the UFC running to 2027, and note that the channels previously carried a wider portfolio including the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League before that catalogue contracted.[4]

The brand also appears in domestic football distribution. When the Ligue de Football Professionnel announced on 15 September 2025 that its own platform Ligue 1+ had passed a million subscribers — 1.026 million at 14 September 2025, a month after the 15 August 2025 launch — it listed RMC Sport among the distribution partners through which the platform is sold, alongside DAZN, Prime Video, Molotov, Orange, Free, SFR and Bouygues Telecom.[5]

How large is RMC's audience?

Médiamétrie measures it directly. In the EAR > National survey covering 30 March to 28 June 2026, on 26,454 interviews with people aged 13 and over, RMC recorded a cumulative audience of 4.8 per cent, 2,766,000 listeners, an audience share of 5.2 per cent and 1 hour 59 minutes of listening per listener, for Monday to Friday between 5am and midnight.[1]

The same release gives the preceding quarter, January to March 2026, at 5.0 per cent cumulative audience, 2,861,000 listeners and a 5.3 per cent share, so the movement across the two quarters is slightly downward on all three measures.[1] These are figures for the radio station as a whole across all its programming, not for its sports hours, which are not separately published in that release.

No subscriber figure for the RMC Sport pay channels appears in either of the June 2026 reports on their sale, and none is asserted here.[3][4]

Since when has RMC existed?

No founding date for the station could be established from a primary source retrieved for this page, and none is asserted. The dates that can be given are ownership dates, and they are recent.

The Autorité de la concurrence cleared CMA CGM's acquisition of exclusive control of Altice Media, RMC included, by decision 24-DCC-141 of 28 June 2024, subject to five-year behavioural commitments preventing the bundling of advertising space between the newspaper La Provence and the overlapping local BFM channels in Marseille, Nice, Toulon and the Alpes region, with separate advertising departments and independent monitoring.[2] The RMC Sport channels stayed with Altice at that point and were the subject of a separate transaction announced on 4 June 2026 and described as being finalised the following day.[3][4] Whether that second purchase has completed as at the date of this page could not be confirmed from a source retrieved here.

Why does RMC matter in France's sport?

Because of the size of the daily radio audience attached to the brand and the fact that it is independently measured. Médiamétrie's 2,766,000 listeners and 5.2 per cent share for April to June 2026 are survey figures published by the industry's joint measurement body, not by the station, which is what makes them usable.[1]

Its second claim is structural: after the June 2026 transaction the same group holds a national radio station, free-to-air television channels, and two pay sports channels, which is an unusual combination in France and was examined by the competition authority when the first half of it was assembled in 2024.[2][3]

In rights terms the group's position is narrower than its name suggests. The pay channels' portfolio has contracted to combat sport with a UFC contract running to 2027, and the brand's role in domestic football is now that of a distributor of the league's own platform rather than a rights holder — a distinction that matters when reading French broadcasting claims and is set out under broadcast rights.[4][5]
