What is ΡΙΚ?
ΡΙΚ is the Republic of Cyprus's statutory broadcaster, and the statute is the place to start. Article 4 of the Ο περί Ραδιοφωνικού Ιδρύματος Κύπρου Νόμος, ΚΕΦ.300Α, establishes το Ραδιοφωνικό Ίδρυμα Κύπρου as a “νομικό πρόσωπο με διηνεκή διαδοχή και κοινή σφραγίδα” — a corporate body with perpetual succession and a common seal.[2] Article 17(1) states the Ίδρυμα's primary duty as “να λειτουργεί με ήχο ή/και εικόνα δημόσια ραδιοτηλεοπτική υπηρεσία”, to operate a public radio and television service with sound and/or picture.[2] The consolidated text used here is CyLaw's, whose index for the chapter lists amendment from N. 46/1959 through to N. 196(I)/2021.[1]
On its own site the organisation gives its name as Ραδιοφωνικό Ίδρυμα Κύπρου and lists four television channels — ΡΙΚ 1, ΡΙΚ 2, ΡΙΚ HD and ΡΙΚ SAT — and four radio programmes, the Πρώτο, Δεύτερο and Τρίτο Πρόγραμμα ΡΙΚ and the Τέταρτο Πρόγραμμα ΡΙΚ – Classic, alongside on-demand services and a hybrid television application it calls ΡΙΚFLIX.[4]
What does ΡΙΚ cover?
The site carries a standing sports section headed Αθλητικές Ειδήσεις in its main navigation.[4] Its news service reports the governing bodies directly: on 7 July 2022 it published the presentation by the Κυπριακή Ομοσπονδία Ποδοσφαίρου and UEFA of a study they called the Χάρτης του Κυπριακού Ποδοσφαίρου, giving total club revenues of €64 million for the 2020/21 season, a breakdown of 21 per cent television rights, 26 per cent sponsorship, 8 per cent ticket sales and 17 per cent UEFA competition income, 60 per cent of revenue spent on player wages, a 6 per cent fall in league attendance between 2010 and 2019, and 27 clubs having played in the top division since 2008 of which five were ever present.[5]
What it may do with sports rights is constrained by its own statute. Article 19Β, whose amendment history on CyLaw lists N. 24(I)/2000 and N. 96(I)/2004, provides that the Ίδρυμα “δε δύναται να μεταδίδει εκδηλώσεις, οι οποίες θεωρούνται από τη Δημοκρατία μείζονος σημασίας για την κοινωνία”, designated as such by the broadcasting authority, in a way that would prevent a significant section of the public in the Republic from following them through live or deferred coverage on free-to-air television; a further subsection extends the same restraint to the exercise of exclusive rights affecting audiences in other member states.[3]
How large is ΡΙΚ's audience?
The recognised television currency in Cyprus is the measurement run by AGB (Cyprus) Ltd. The company states that it has produced television audience measurement data in Cyprus since September 1997, with first official data on 1 January 1998, from a panel of about 450 households carrying 981 people meters and covering 1,349 persons aged 4 and over across the districts of Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Famagusta, against a stated universe of 699,350 people; it names CyBC among its subscribers alongside ANT1, MEGA and SIGMA.[6]
The company's published night-news table, as retrieved on 23 September 2026, covers the week of 25 to 31 December 2023 and prints seven separate days rather than a combined period, with an average-minute rating and a share for each channel against the population aged 4 and over. For Saturday 30 December 2023 it gives ΡΙΚ-1 a 6.9 per cent rating and a 20.6 per cent share.[7] That figure is one day's reading, not a period average, and no audited period average for ΡΙΚ covering 2026 could be retrieved for this page.
Since when has ΡΙΚ existed?
The corporation's own site, as retrieved on 23 September 2026, publishes no founding date and no statement of its legal basis.[4] The statute does not carry a year in its title either: it is a chapter of the revised laws, ΚΕΦ.300Α, and CyLaw's index shows its earliest listed amendment as the Ο περί Ραδιοφωνικού Ιδρύματος Κύπρου (Τροποποιητικός) Νόμος του 1959 (N. 46/1959), so the principal law is earlier than 1959.[1] No founding year is asserted here on that basis.
What can be dated precisely is the amending record: the index lists amendment in every decade from the 1950s to the 2020s, ending with N. 52(I)/2019 and N. 196(I)/2021.[1]
Why does ΡΙΚ matter in Cyprus's sport?
It is the broadcaster the sports-listing rule is written about. Article 19Β names the Ίδρυμα specifically and ties it to the events the broadcasting authority designates as of major importance for society, which is the mechanism by which particular sporting events stay on free-to-air television.[3]
Two monitoring bodies have published on the setting in which it operates, and their words are given here as theirs. The Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom's Media Pluralism Monitor for Cyprus, 2026 edition, scores Market Plurality at 91 per cent, Political Independence at 62 per cent, Social Inclusiveness at 71 per cent and Fundamental Protection at 49 per cent, and states that “there is a high concentration in the market share of service providers in the audio-visual and the press, which is affecting plurality of information resources”; on the public broadcaster it states that “the long-overdue new law on the PSM is still parliamentary discussion stage (March 2026), with the situation in all respects unchanged”.[8] Reporters Without Borders places Cyprus 80th of 180 in its 2026 Press Freedom Index with a score of 56.91, and its indicator scores are political 42.90, economic 39.67, legal 58.37, social 54.95 and security 88.69.[9]
