What is Repretel?
Repretel is a Costa Rican television group; the Kantar IBOPE Media tables list news and sports programmes on its Canal 6.[3] Its site's title reads “Repretel.com - Noticias de Costa Rica - Canales 6, 11, 4 y 2”, and its sports news sits on the path repretel.com/noticias-de-costa-rica-repretel/deportes; the listing's articles load by script and no headlines could be read from it.[1]
Ownership. Mediapolis, a media-ownership project of the University of Costa Rica's research institutes, states: “El Grupo Repretel pertenece al Grupo Albavisión, un consorcio internacional presente en el 70% de Latinoamérica que administra 50 canales de televisión, 68 estaciones de radio” — the description continues beyond that. It names Remigio Ángel González González as “empresario mexicano-guatemalteco propietario y fundador de la red latinoamericana de medios Albavisión.” Its list of associated legal persons opens with Central de Radios CDR S. A., Televisora Sur y Norte S.A., Corporación Costarricense de Televisión, Telesistema Nacional S.A. and Teleamérica S.A., each with its registration number, and continues with Representaciones Televisivas Repretel S.A and a series of radio companies.[2] The entry carries no update date, and no register entry was retrieved to anchor it to 2026.
El Financiero reported on 24 November 2025 that “Grupo Repretel confirmó la entrega formal de ofertas ante la Sutel” and that it sought to renew the concessions of its four television channels, 2, 4, 6 and 11.[4]
What does Repretel cover?
Sports news. The Kantar IBOPE Media tables published by Centro TV list “DEPORTES REPRETEL” on Canal 6 with 50 broadcasts in July 2026 and 46 in August 2026.[3] Its site links programme pages at the paths /programa/deportes-repretel, /programa/120-minutos and /programa/toros-del-6.[1]
Football. The same tables list “FUTBOL NACIONAL” on Canal 6 Repretel in December 2025, and a pre-match programme for the national team, “PREVIO PARTIDO SELECCION NAL”, with two broadcasts in August 2026.[3] No statement of the football rights Repretel holds for the 2026-2027 season was retrieved.
How large is Repretel's audience?
Centro TV publishes monthly rankings of programmes on Canal 7 Teletica and Canal 6 Repretel from Kantar IBOPE Media data, with a household rating (“Hogares Total”) and a count of individuals. Each figure below is one month's reading.[3]
For December 2025 the table ranks “FUTBOL NACIONAL” on Canal 6 Repretel 17th, at a household rating of 9.09 and 104,640 individuals. For July 2026 “DEPORTES REPRETEL” is 24th, at 7.57 and 74,590 individuals; for August 2026 it is 21st, at 7.21 and 74,670 individuals, and the national-team pre-match programme is 17th, at 7.48 and 66,560 individuals.[3]
These are the rankings of two channels' programmes, not a measure of each group's total audience, and no channel share for Repretel was retrieved.
Since when has Repretel existed?
Mediapolis states: “Fue fundado entre 1994 cuando comenzó a operar la señal del Canal 9 de televisión abierta.” Its timeline records: “El 30 de septiembre, el Grupo Repretel comienza a operar la señal del canal 9 de televisión abierta.”[2] That is one secondary account, and no founding date from Repretel itself was retrieved.
Mediapolis states that the group now “explota las frecuencias de los canales 2, 4, 6 y 11 de la TV abierta en Costa Rica”, and lists radio stations of the group, including Monumental 93.5 FM.[2]
Why does Repretel matter in Costa Rica's sport?
Repretel's Canal 6 carries a daily sports news programme that appears in the monthly Kantar IBOPE Media rankings through July and August 2026, and it carried domestic league football in December 2025 and national-team programming in August 2026.[3]
Broadcast frequencies. El Financiero reported on 24 November 2025 that the Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (Sutel) had closed on 21 November a public auction of radio and television frequencies instructed by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación, Tecnología y Telecomunicaciones (Micitt).[4] Sutel's page on the auction states: “La Sala Constitucional de la Corte Suprema de Justicia declaró con lugar un recurso de amparo y dejó sin efecto el proceso concursal público para el otorgamiento de concesiones del espectro radioeléctrico destinado a servicios de radiodifusión sonora en Amplitud Modulada (AM), Frecuencia Modulada (FM) y televisión abierta.” It gives the ruling as No. 2026-007626 of 27 February 2026, after a precautionary suspension on 26 November 2025, and states that Micitt is to start the procedure again taking account of the judgment.[5] Teletica reported on 27 March 2026 that decreto 45671-Micitt, published in La Gaceta, extended the concessions of free-to-air radio and television services “hasta la firmeza de las decisiones que pongan término a los respectivos procedimientos concursales para dichos servicios.”[6]
Reporters Without Borders, in its 2026 country entry, states that “The concentration of media ownership in the hands of a few conglomerates has limited media pluralism.” It names no outlet in that passage.[7]
