What is Primera Hora?

Primera Hora is a Spanish-language daily news brand published from Puerto Rico by GFR Media. Its own pages carry the line “Copyright © 2026 GFR Media LLC.”, and it is the second of the two newspaper brands named on the publisher's corporate site.[1][2]

GFR Media states that it is “Una empresa del Grupo Ferré Rangel”.[2] That is the publisher's own statement of ownership. The corporate site carried a copyright line dated 2023 when retrieved, while the newspaper's own pages carried 2026, so the two are on different maintenance cycles.[2][1]

What does Primera Hora cover?

The sports navigation is divided into Baloncesto, Béisbol, Boxeo, Voleibol, Hipismo, Fútbol and Otros deportes, and the site maintains standing topic archives for individual competitions, including one for the Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente.[1] Horse racing has its own heading rather than sitting under other sports.

What the title has published that is countable is league attendance. On 15 August 2025 it reported the Baloncesto Superior Nacional's completed-season figure of “más de 1,015,000 fanáticos [que] visitaron las canchas de las 12 franquicias esta temporada”, announced by the league president Ricardo Dalmau.[3] On 23 January 2026 it reported the Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente's statement that “La asistencia total de la temporada 2025-26 culminó en 381,000 fanáticos, lo que representa un incremento de 52,000 personas (+15.8%) en comparación con la temporada 2024-25”, with “Durante la temporada se efectuaron 133 juegos, dos más que el año anterior”.[4] On 24 November 2025 it reported the women's league, the Baloncesto Superior Nacional Femenino, giving a season attendance above 80,000 and a final series passing 500,000 views on streaming platforms.[5]

In each case the figure is the league's, and the newspaper is the place it was published with a date attached. The baseball report is explicit that the 133 games were two more than the year before, which is what allows the two seasons to be compared at all; the basketball report gives the number of franchises the total covers.[4][3]

Alongside the leagues the desk runs the standing archives. The topic page for the professional baseball league collects the title's reporting on that competition in one place, which is how a dated series of league statements becomes traceable rather than scattered across a season's news cycle.[1]

How large is Primera Hora's audience?

No audited figure for this title on its own could be retrieved. The publisher publishes a group figure covering its brands together: “una audiencia de 2M de adultos en Puerto Rico y más de 10M de usuarios en nuestras plataformas digitales”.[2]

GFR Media names an audited currency — it states that its print and digital circulation data are audited by the Alliance for Audited Media — and dates the underlying data to July 2023, but the audited numbers were not displayed on the page retrieved.[2] This page therefore records the currency and its date and publishes no circulation or unique-user number for the title.

Since when has Primera Hora existed?

GFR Media's own corporate timeline places “Nace Primera Hora” at 1997.[6] EnciclopediaPR, the reference work published by Humanidades Puerto Rico, states that “comenzó en noviembre de 1997 la publicación del periódico Primera Hora”.[7] Neither gives a day, and the publisher's corporate home page states no anniversary for the brand.[2]

The publishing record that can be dated runs from 15 August 2025 through 24 November 2025 to 23 January 2026 in the retrieved sports reporting, with a standing topic archive maintained for the professional baseball league and a 2026 copyright line.[3][5][4][1]

Founded, acquired and renamed are three different dates and only the first is given on any page retrieved for this title. The corporate site that names the brand served a copyright line dated 2023, three years older than the one the newspaper itself serves, so the absence is in the publisher's own material rather than in the newspaper's.[2][1]

Why does Primera Hora matter in Puerto Rico's sport?

Because the measured proxies for spectator interest in Puerto Rican sport — the ones a reference page can use instead of a survey — were published here with their dates and their issuing bodies. The basketball season total for 2025, the baseball season total for 2025-26 and the women's basketball season total for 2025 all appear in its reporting, each attributed to the league that issued it.[3][4][5]

The baseball figure in particular is given as a completed-season total rather than a running count, which is the distinction that makes an attendance number usable at all, and the league's own president repeated it as a season total in the following close season.[4]

The women's league figures matter for the same reason. Without them the only published gate figure for Puerto Rican basketball would be the men's, and a single figure cannot show whether a sport's audience is concentrated in one competition; the title published both, each attributed to the league that issued it.[5][3]
