What is Placar?

Placar is a Brazilian football magazine, published monthly and sold on newsstands, with a website at placar.com.br carrying live scores, competition tables and news. Its own footer describes "mais de 56 anos de história", and its archive catalogue is presented as the catalogue of printed editions "desde 1970".[1] [2]

The title's frequently asked questions page states that Placar was launched on 20 March 1970 by Editora Abril, that it is now monthly after earlier periods as a weekly, that twelve editions a year are published with posters of the champions of the main competitions alongside them, and that the newsstand price is R$24,90, with digital and print subscriptions sold through a membership scheme.[3]

The publisher is Editora Score. The magazine's own account says Score has run the publication since November 2022; Meio & Mensagem, reporting the relaunch on 22 November 2022, described it as a licensing agreement between Score Editora and Editora Abril for the then 52-year-old brand.[3] [4]

What does Placar cover?

Football, and almost only football. The site's editorial sections are the Brasileirão, the Copa do Brasil, the Copa Libertadores, the Copa Sul-Americana, the Kings League, the FIFA World Cup, the Champions League and the Spanish and English leagues, each with a results table, together with interviews and a predictions game.[2]

Its blogs show the range within that single sport: a weekly feature drawing on five decades of back issues, a column of records, statistics and anniversaries, a column on sponsorship and events, a women's football section, and a column on football kit design.[2]

The printed magazine is the part that distinguishes it from a news site. The archive catalogue lists every printed edition from 1970 and marks which remain for sale; the most recent listed in September 2026 was issue 1539, a guide to the 2026/27 Champions League.[1] On the wider question of who keeps the game's records, see statistics and records keepers.

What are Placar's reach and standing?

Placar's claim is longevity and record rather than audience scale, and the retrievable evidence for it is the magazine's own: more than 56 years of history, and a continuous catalogue of printed editions from 1970 to the current number.[1] [2] A current circulation figure or audited readership for the magazine could not be retrieved.

Its standing in the market is visible instead in the publishing arrangement. Meio & Mensagem reported in November 2022 that Score Editora took the brand on from Editora Abril and planned about twenty hires over the following year, including the broadcasters Flavio Gomes and Felippe Facincani from Fox and ESPN, with the relaunch built around YouTube, TikTok, Kwai and Twitch and around opinion and humour rather than breaking news. Gustavo Leme, leading the project, said the investment needed for the brand to become relevant again had not been made under the previous management — his characterisation, reported at the time.[4]

Since when?

20 March 1970, launched by Editora Abril, according to the magazine's own frequently asked questions page; the archive catalogue is consistent with it, running printed editions from 1970 onward.[3] [1]

The ownership chain is where the published accounts diverge and should be read carefully. The magazine's own page gives Editora Abril from 1970 to 2015, Editora Caras from 2015 to 2016, and Editora Score from November 2022.[3] Meio & Mensagem, writing in November 2022, described the arrangement as Score licensing the brand from Editora Abril, which implies that Abril still held the title at that date.[4] The two accounts do not agree on who held the masthead in the intervening years, and this page could not retrieve a primary record — a corporate filing or a court document — to settle it.

What is not in doubt is that the magazine has continued to appear in print: issue 1539 was listed in September 2026.[1]

Why does Placar matter in Brazil's sport?

It is a football magazine that has published since 1970, and its printed-edition catalogue from that year is a dated record of the domestic game.[1] [3]

It also documents what happened to Brazilian sports print. Placar changed publisher more than once, moved between weekly and monthly frequency and now runs twelve editions a year alongside a digital operation built on video platforms and social channels.[3] [4] The daily newspaper model did not survive alongside it, and the magazine now sells twelve numbered editions a year on newsstands at R$24,90 while its reporting runs free on the web.[3]

For readers using it as a source the useful distinction is between the magazine and the site. The archive catalogue is the magazine's, edition by edition since 1970; the live tables and results at placar.com.br are a separate current service covering the Campeonato Brasileiro, the Copa Libertadores and the European competitions.[1] [2] See also soccer.
