What is Nemzeti Sport?
Nemzeti Sport is a Hungarian daily newspaper devoted to sport, published together with the website at nemzetisport.hu. Its masthead gives the publisher as N.S. Média és Vagyonkezelő Kft., of 1034 Budapest, Bécsi út 120-128, with Péter Koltai as managing director and Zsolt Somogyi as acting editor-in-chief (megbízott főszerkesztő).[1]
The title is in state hands. On 1 October 2022, 444.hu reported that the minister for the national economy, Márton Nagy, had designated the state-owned Nemzeti Sportügynökség Nonprofit Zrt. to exercise the ownership rights in N.S. Média és Vagyonkezelő Kft., the company that had been carved out of Mediaworks Hungary Zrt. in the summer of that year to hold the paper.[2] The investigative outlet átlátszó reported in May 2025 that it had obtained the purchase documents after winning a court case for access to them, that the state paid 3.5 billion forint, and that a further 610 million forint net had been committed to a 24-month distribution contract, citing public procurement notices.[3]
What does Nemzeti Sport cover?
The paper's published output ranges across domestic and international sport. Its football desk reports the Nemzeti Bajnokság I in detail, including the competition's own economics: on 26 May 2025 it published the 2024/25 attendance figures, giving an average of 4,553 spectators a match against 4,188 the previous season and describing the result as a 25-year high.[4] In July 2026 it reported the outcome of the Magyar Labdarúgó-szövetség's broadcast tender, giving the contract value at 6 billion forint for the 2026/27 season and quoting MTVA's statement that this compared with 10 billion forint a year earlier.[5]
Coverage extends to the governance and financing of Hungarian sport. On 7 September 2026 the paper reported the Állami Számvevőszék's analysis of the corporate-tax allowance for team sports, setting out the audit office's figures — 367.5 billion forint distributed between 2022 and 2025, 49.2 billion of it to infrastructure, and a rise in supported organisations from 7,563 in 2011 to 10,466 in 2024 — and quoting the office's finding that the system “nem a sportszakmai eredményességet helyezi a középpontba és visszaélésekre is lehetőséget ad”: does not place sporting performance at its centre and also gives scope for abuses.[6]
It also carries the ministry's own participation statistics. On 3 October 2017 it reported, from an MTI briefing by the then state secretary for sport Tünde Szabó, that 501,354 athletes held a Hungarian competition licence.[7] The individual Olympic sports, the team championships and international competition all appear in the same daily cycle.
How large is Nemzeti Sport's audience?
No audited circulation figure for Nemzeti Sport could be retrieved for this page. Hungarian print circulation is audited by MATESZ, the Magyar Terjesztés-Ellenőrző Szövetség, and press distribution and readership are also reported in the annual market report of the Nemzeti Média- és Hírközlési Hatóság; neither body's current figure for this title could be obtained here, and no estimate is offered in its place.
What is documented is public expenditure attached to the title. Átlátszó reported in May 2025 that 610 million forint net had been committed to a 24-month contract for distributing the paper, and that the state had paid 3.5 billion forint to acquire the publisher; átlátszó stated that it obtained the purchase price only after winning a court case for access to the documents.[3]
Online, no audited Hungarian digital-audience figure for nemzetisport.hu could be retrieved. Traffic estimators are not audited measurement and are not used here.
Since when has Nemzeti Sport existed?
Three dates have to be kept apart for this title: the date of first publication, the date the present publishing company was created, and the date ownership passed to the state.
Reporting on the 2022 transfer described Nemzeti Sport as the country's oldest sports daily, but no primary source for the date of its first issue could be retrieved for this page, and none is asserted here.[2]
The publishing company is recent. 444.hu reported that N.S. Média és Vagyonkezelő Kft. was established in the summer of 2022 within Mediaworks Hungary Zrt. to hold the paper, and that on 1 October 2022 the state-owned Nemzeti Sportügynökség Nonprofit Zrt. was designated to exercise the ownership rights in it.[2] That company is the publisher named on the current masthead.[1] Átlátszó's May 2025 report puts the consideration at 3.5 billion forint.[3]
Why does Nemzeti Sport matter in Hungary's sport?
The paper is one of the few Hungarian outlets that reports the institutional side of sport as a continuing beat rather than an occasional story. Its September 2026 write-up of the Állami Számvevőszék analysis is the route by which the audit office's figures on the team-sport tax allowance reached a general sporting readership, including the office's own summary, which begins “bár a látvány-csapatsportok TAO támogatása jelentősen hozzájárult az ágazat infrastrukturális és szakmai fejlődéséhez” before concluding that “a rendszer bevezetése óta eltelt idő, az ellenőrzési tapasztalatok és a feltárt visszaélések miatt indokolt a támogatási rendszer felülvizsgálata”.[6]
It is also a standing record for figures that are otherwise scattered: season attendance averages for the NB I,[4] the value and holder of the league's broadcast contract,[5] and the ministry's licensed-athlete counts.[7]
At the same time its ownership is a documented public fact: the publisher's ownership rights have been exercised by a state company since 1 October 2022, and the purchase price became public only through a freedom-of-information case brought by átlátszó.[2][3] Both things are true at once, and a reader weighing the paper's reporting on state sports financing has the dates for each.
