What is Mundo Deportivo?

Mundo Deportivo is a Spanish daily sports newspaper published in Barcelona, which also runs a website at mundodeportivo.com. It is one of the titles of Grupo Godó, a Spanish media holding company. A corporate profile of the group describes it as "el primer holding español de comunicación, controlado, principalmente, por la familia Godó", and names La Vanguardia and Mundo Deportivo as its newspapers and RAC 1 and RAC 105 as its radio stations.[1]

The same profile separates the group's own date from those of its papers: "El grupo fue creado en 1998. Su origen está ligado al diario La Vanguardia, fundado en 1881, y a El Mundo Deportivo, que tiene su primera publicación fechada en 1906."[1] The group's president is given as Javier Godó, III Conde de Godó, and its chief executive as Carlos Godó Valls.[1] These are the holding company's own arrangements as described in that profile and are attributed to it.

The paper's own website could not be retrieved for this account, so its masthead, its current director and its statement of editorial principles are not quoted here.

What does Mundo Deportivo cover?

The title is measured as a sports daily in both of the Spanish measurement series. The Estudio General de Medios carries it in the newspaper table with Marca, AS and Sport and the general dailies.[3][4] Comscore's State of Sports 2025 España report, as reported on 19 November 2025, counted mundodeportivo.com among the Spanish sports digital properties it measured, with marca.com, as.com, sport.es and relevo.com.[5]

Its place in the field is documented in the academic literature. A 2013 study by Clara Sainz de Baranda Andújar in Materiales para la Historia del Deporte describes El Mundo Deportivo as "el decano de los diarios deportivos españoles" and as "el único diario español, nacido a principios del siglo XX que sobrevive en la actualidad"; the study's reference list records the paper's run as "Mundo Deportivo. Desde 1906-2012".[2] That is a statement about the title's age relative to the others, attributed to the study, not a judgement about its content.

The paper is published in Barcelona and sits in a group whose other newspaper and whose two radio stations are also Barcelona-based.[1] A current section-by-section account of what Mundo Deportivo publishes could not be sourced, because its own site could not be retrieved, and is therefore not given.

How large is Mundo Deportivo's audience?

For the printed paper, the Estudio General de Medios recorded Mundo Deportivo at 276,000 readers a day in its second wave of 2026, whose fieldwork is reported as running from 19 March to 3 June 2026; the account that carries the table records the figure as up on the preceding wave, against falls for Marca, AS and Sport in the same table.[3] The first wave of 2026, reported on 15 April 2026, recorded a rise of 5.39 per cent for Mundo Deportivo but did not state the figure itself in the account retrieved.[4]

Those are survey readership estimates rather than audited circulation. No audited circulation figure from OJD/Introl could be retrieved for the paper, and none is stated here.

For the website, the account of Comscore's State of Sports 2025 España report published on 19 November 2025 reported the remaining Spanish sports properties — sport.es, mundodeportivo.com and relevo.com — as falling between 14.1 million and 8.9 million users, without giving a figure for any of them individually, so no single digital figure for Mundo Deportivo can be stated from that source.[5] A precisely dated earlier reading exists: a Comscore ranking for August 2021, published in September 2021, put mundodeportivo.com at 17,652,000 unique users, behind as.com at 19,074,000, elpais.com at 18,861,000 and marca.com at 17,698,000.[6] That measurement is five years old and is given only as a dated comparison.

Since when has Mundo Deportivo existed?

Grupo Godó's corporate profile dates the paper's first publication to 1906.[1] The 2013 academic study of the Spanish sports press records the same starting year in its reference list and describes the title as the only Spanish daily born at the beginning of the twentieth century that still survives.[2] Those are two independent sources for the year, one corporate and one scholarly.

The precise date of the first issue, the names of the founders, the place of the first printing and the paper's original frequency could not be established: the Biblioteca Nacional de España's hemeroteca entry for the title and the paper's own historical pages could not be retrieved, and the 2013 study does not state them. They are therefore not given here.

The publisher's date is separate and later. The holding company that owns the paper today was created in 1998, according to its own profile, and its origin is described there as tied to both La Vanguardia, dated 1881, and El Mundo Deportivo, dated 1906.[1] The title's first appearance, the group's creation and the family's control of it are three separate matters and are kept separate here.

Why does Mundo Deportivo matter in Spain's sport?

The first reason is age, and it is the one the sources actually carry. A 2013 peer-reviewed study of the Spanish sports press calls the paper the oldest of the Spanish sports dailies and the only Spanish daily founded in the early twentieth century still in publication.[2] That characterisation belongs to the study and is reported as the study's, not asserted here.

The second is measured reach. The EGM's second 2026 wave put the paper third among the Spanish sports dailies at 276,000 readers a day, behind Marca at 881,000 and AS at 369,000 and ahead of Sport at 177,000, and it was the only one of the four to rise in that wave.[3] Its digital audience was measured by Comscore in the report reported in November 2025, though that account did not separate it from sport.es.[5]

The third is position. Mundo Deportivo is published in Barcelona inside a group whose other newspaper is a Barcelona general daily and whose radio stations broadcast in Catalan, which places one of Spain's four national sports dailies outside Madrid.[1] The competitions it covers are described elsewhere on this site under LaLiga and Liga Endesa, and the national picture under sport in Spain.
