What is MTI?
MTI — the Magyar Távirati Iroda — is the Hungarian news agency. Its public pages at mti.hu carry the copyright line “2024 Duna Médiaszolgáltató Nonprofit Zrt. Minden jog fenntartva”, the public media company, and list content sales (tartalomértékesítés) and a national press-release repository (Nemzeti közleménytár) among its services.[1] The same company's corporate site lists television, radio, MTI and online among its divisions.[2]
That company's public-service obligations are set by Act CLXXXV of 2010 on media services and mass communication, which binds the közszolgálati médiaszolgáltató to the European- and Hungarian-work quotas in § 20(3) and to the daily news obligation in § 38(1).[6] Index reported on 27 July 2026 that MTVA had been merged into Duna Médiaszolgáltató Nonprofit Zrt. on 26 July 2026, with a change of name to Magyar Rádió és Televízió Nonprofit Zrt. to follow its entry in the company register.[7]
What does MTI cover?
MTI is a general agency, and sport reaches the Hungarian press through it as one strand among many. Its briefings are the origin of figures that later circulate under other mastheads: Nemzeti Sport's report of 3 October 2017 that 501,354 athletes held a Hungarian competition licence, together with the then state secretary's comparison against 2011, was carried from an MTI briefing.[3]
That pattern — a ministry or federation briefing, an agency dispatch, then publication across outlets — is how most official Hungarian sports statistics enter the record, and it is why the agency matters to a reader tracing a figure back to its issuing body.
The agency's sports output is not a separate publication with its own masthead: it reaches readers inside other outlets, and an item carried from the wire is marked as such in the receiving outlet's credit line. That is how the 2017 licensed-athlete figure is identifiable as an MTI item in Nemzeti Sport's pages.[3]
Because the agency sits inside the same public media group that operates the country's public-service sports channel, some events are covered by the group in two forms, wire copy and broadcast; the corporate relationship is stated on both organisations' own pages.[1][2] A named monitoring body has published on that group. The Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom's Media Pluralism Monitor, in its 2026 Hungary assessment, puts the country at 85 per cent risk on Market Plurality and 80 per cent on Political Independence, and states that “Media ownership in Hungary is highly concentrated, which distorts the market and threatens the sustainability of news media” and that “Government control over private media and the capture of public service media are still common”.[8]
How large is MTI's audience?
A news agency's reach is not measured the way a channel's or a newspaper's is: its output is consumed through subscribing outlets rather than by a panel-measured audience. No audited subscriber or reach figure for MTI could be retrieved for this page, and none is estimated here.
What can be stated is the corporate context. MTI's own pages carry the copyright of Duna Médiaszolgáltató Nonprofit Zrt.,[1] and that company's site lists MTI alongside its television, radio and online operations.[2] The audience figures the same group publishes for its television channels come from Nielsen Közönségmérés by way of the regulator's annual market report;[4] no equivalent instrument exists for agency copy.
A second, indirect measure would be the number of outlets carrying MTI items, which is not published as an audited figure either. Where an agency item is visible in this way it is visible one outlet at a time, as in the Nemzeti Sport report of October 2017.[3] No aggregate take-up figure is asserted here.
Since when has MTI existed?
Approval, first operation and later changes of status are separate dates here. Hirado.hu reported on 3 March 2018 that the agency was founded by two parliamentary stenographers, Hugó Maszák and Géza Egyesy; that the government approved their proposal on 28 December 1880; that “Ferenc József magyar király 1881 januárjában aláírta”; and that the agency began operating in March 1881.[5]
The same account records that the agency ran as a private company in its early decades and that on 16 August 1945 the government classified MTI among “fasiszta hírközvetítő részvénytársaságoknak”, taking its assets into state hands.[5] Its present corporate position — pages published under Duna Médiaszolgáltató Nonprofit Zrt. — is a later arrangement again, and is stated here from the company's own pages rather than from a founding narrative.[1]
Why does MTI matter in Hungary's sport?
The agency is the point at which official Hungarian sports numbers become public. A licensed-athlete total announced by a state secretary reaches newspaper readers as an MTI-sourced item, and the figure that then circulates carries the agency's dispatch as its provenance rather than an independent count.[3]
For a reader checking a Hungarian sports statistic, that matters in a specific way: the chain runs from the issuing body through the agency to the outlet, and the issuing body is usually the same one that runs the programme being measured. Naming the chain is part of reading the figure.
MTI sits inside the same public media group that operates the country's public-service sports channel and that holds the domestic football broadcast contract for 2026/27, a structural fact stated here with its dates.[2][4]
