What is Moldova 1?

Moldova 1 is the television channel of Teleradio-Moldova. The Codul serviciilor media audiovizuale, Code No. 174 of 8 November 2018, is the statute: in the consolidated text served by legis.md, whose modification note names Law No. 302 of 19 December 2024, in force from 10 February 2025, Article 32(1) reads “În Republica Moldova funcţionează: a) furnizorul public naţional de servicii media” and names Teleradio-Moldova; point b) names the regional provider, Gagauziya Radio Televizionu.[3]

Article 31 opens: “Furnizorii publici de servicii media se află în serviciul publicului, funcţionează din contribuţia publicului, sînt supuşi controlului public şi au misiunea să realizeze în practică următoarele principii:” and then lists those principles.[3]

The company's own page lists its channels as Moldova 1, Moldova 2, Radio Moldova, Radio Moldova Tineret and Radio Moldova Muzical, among others.[2] The site moldova1.md carries the footer “© 2026 IP Teleradio-Moldova. Toate drepturile rezervate.” and the line “Conținutul acestui site nu reprezintă poziția oficială a Departamentului pentru Relația cu Republica Moldova.”[1]

What does Moldova 1 cover?

The law sets sport inside the public remit.

The site's sport section is a single category. Its items of 23 to 25 September 2026 included the national football team's arrival in Slovakia for a Nations League match, the preview of Slovakia v Moldova, and the headline “Alexandru Paraschiv a cucerit medalia de bronz la Campionatele Europene”.[1] Those are three days' items.

Rights. Teleradio-Moldova states, on an undated page about itself: “Moldova 1 deţine dreptul exclusiv de a transmite pe teritoriul Republicii Moldova concertele din cadrul Concursului european de cântec „Eurovision Song Contest” şi Campionatul Mondial la fotbal.”[2] The company's page names no edition or term, and no dated contract was retrieved. On 22 February 2026 the site announced the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games at the Arena di Verona live on Moldova 2, with a special edition on Moldova 1 from 20:30.[4]

The 2024 Summer Games were a different case. NewsMaker reported on 29 July 2024 that Teleradio-Moldova's director, Vlad Țurcanu, had said Moldova 1 was not broadcasting the Paris Games live because the rights belonged to Romanian Television, TVR, and had been bought several years earlier, before his administration began. The same report states that the current administration had conducted negotiations to take over the broadcasting of later Winter and Summer Games up to 2032; no outcome of those negotiations was retrieved.[5]

How large is Moldova 1's audience?

Television audiences in Moldova are measured by TV MR MLD, the representative of The Nielsen Company; its monthly overviews could not be read as text. The figures that follow are the Media Ownership Monitor's.

The Media Ownership Monitor Moldova 2024, published by Global Media Registry and Media Guard, lists the most-watched channels “Conform datelor din prima jumătate a anului 2024” as Cinema 1, Mega-CTC, Pro TV, Jurnal TV, Canal 5, TV 8, Moldova 1, One TV, Star TV, N4, Exclusiv TV, 7 TV, Moldova 2, RLive TV and Global 24. Moldova 1 is seventh in that list and Moldova 2 thirteenth.[7] Its outlet page for Moldova 1 prints “Cotă de audiență” as 3,73%, without a period.[6] These are first-half 2024 readings, not current ones.

The company describes its channel in its own words: “Postul public de televiziune Moldova 1 este unul din cele mai vizionate posturi de televiziune din ţară.” That is its own claim.[2]

On the web, BATI's audited ranking for August 2026, which covers 25 sites in the gemiusAudience Moldova panel, does not include moldova1.md.[9] No audited figure for the site was retrieved.

Since when has Moldova 1 existed?

The company's own account dates the start of television: “Prima emisiune la Televiziunea Moldovei a fost transmisă la ora 19:00 pe 30 aprilie 1958”.[2] The Media Ownership Monitor gives 1958 as the year the channel was founded, and names as its founder the “Comitetul de Stat pentru Televiziune şi Radiodifuziune”.[6]

Its current legal footing is the 2018 Code, published in the Monitorul Oficial on 12 December 2018 and last amended, in the text read, by Law No. 302 of 19 December 2024, in force from 10 February 2025.[3]

Why does Moldova 1 matter in Moldova's sport?

It is the channel of the provider the law names as the national public media service provider, and the same Code lists sporting programmes among that provider's activities.[3] Its operator states that it holds the exclusive right to the football World Cup in Moldova, and in February 2026 its second channel carried the Winter Olympic closing ceremony live.[2][4]

The Media Ownership Monitor records that Moldova 1 belongs to a public institution founded by Parliament, overseen by a supervision and development council whose members Parliament appoints, and it states that the channel broadcasts in Romanian with news in Russian: “Moldova 1 difuzează și știri în limba rusă, are emisiuni și în limba minorităților naționale din R. Moldova”.[6] The Monitor also writes: “Politica editorială a postului public de televiziune a fost influențată de partidele și liderii politici aflați la guvernare”. That is the Monitor's characterisation.[6]

Reporters Without Borders ranks Moldova 31st of 180, with a score of 74.77, in its 2026 index, and states: “Freedom of the press and the right to information are guaranteed by law, and best practices are encouraged by a journalistic code of ethics.”[8]
