What is Match TV?

Match TV — Матч ТВ — is a Russian sports television channel. Its own page on matchtv.ru states that the channel is operated by ООО «Национальный спортивный телеканал», a company the page places inside the sports media business of Gazprom-Media, and describes Match TV as a federal public-access channel about sport and a healthy lifestyle that broadcasts around the clock. The same page says the channel is carried across Russian territory as part of the mandatory RTRS-1 package. Those are the channel's own statements about itself.[1]

The carriage obligation has an instrument behind it. The list of all-Russian mandatory public-access television channels annexed to Presidential Decree No. 715 of 24 June 2009 runs: Первый канал; Телеканал «Россия» (Россия-1); Телеканал «Матч ТВ»; Телекомпания НТВ; Петербург — 5 канал; Телеканал «Россия — Культура»; Российский информационный канал «Россия-24»; детско-юношеский телеканал «Карусель»; Телеканал «Общественное телевидение России»; ТВ ЦЕНТР — Москва. Матч ТВ stands at item 3, added by Presidential Decree No. 365 of 15 July 2015.[2]

The channel was presented by Gazprom-Media in a press release that announced a start of broadcasting on 1 November and named Dmitry Chernyshenko, then chief executive of Gazprom-Media, and Tina Kandelaki as general producer. The release described the holding's sports division as taking in twelve off-air sports channels and the sports online portal Sportbox.ru alongside the new channel.[8]

What does Match TV cover?

In an item published on 1 November 2025 marking ten years on air, the channel set out what it had carried over that period: the Russian Premier League and the Russian Cup; La Liga and Serie A; UFC; the Kontinental Hockey League; the VTB United League in basketball; and world championships in athletics, swimming, judo, fencing, rowing and gymnastics.[3]

The same item gives the channel's own production figures: about seven live broadcasts a day and more than 2,300 a year, of which the channel says more than 60 per cent are produced in-house. It also states that the channel's social accounts carry more than 16.5 million followers. Those are figures the channel publishes about itself rather than audited counts.[3]

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the most recent large property. Reporting on 30 June 2026, the channel said it had broadcast the 48 matches of the group stage.[4] Coverage of the knockout rounds continued into July; the broadcast of Portugal against Spain on 6 July was reported as reaching more than 8.2 million men aged 14 to 59.[5]

How large is Match TV's audience?

Mediascope describes itself as the organisation authorised since 2017 to research the size of television channel audiences in Russia, and states that its television measurement covers residents of the country aged over four, reported both nationally and for the combined aggregate of cities with populations above 100,000.[7]

Reporting Mediascope data on 30 June 2026, Match TV said that the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a whole was watched by 26 million people. That total is given in the report without a stated audience breakdown. Individual matches are reported separately: Portugal against Uzbekistan at 6.6 million, Argentina against Austria at about 6.5 million and Portugal against DR Congo at 5.8 million.[4]

A different figure covers a single week. For 15 to 21 June 2026 the channel put its average share at 10.7 per cent among men aged 14 to 59 in cities with populations of more than 100,000 people, and gave match shares in that audience of 19.8 per cent for England against Croatia and 18.2 per cent each for Germany against Ivory Coast and Uruguay against Spain.[4]

Sport Mail, citing Mediascope RF, reported on 8 July 2026 that the broadcast of Portugal against Spain on 6 July reached more than 8.2 million men aged 14 to 59 and took a 24.3 per cent share in that same audience. The same report put the channel's average television share in June 2026 at 7.4 per cent without stating the universe for it, and gave a further figure of 5.7 per cent measured across Russian cities with populations above 100,000.[5]

Apart from the two tournament reports, no audited full-year audience figure for the channel could be retrieved.

Since when has Match TV existed?

The channel has a decree date, an announcement date and a first-broadcast date, and they fall in that order. Presidential Decree No. 365 of 15 July 2015 added Матч ТВ to the list of mandatory public-access channels.[2] Gazprom-Media then presented the channel publicly, announcing that broadcasting would begin on 1 November and naming its first leadership.[8] Broadcasting itself began on 1 November 2015, the date the channel used when it marked ten years on air on 1 November 2025.[3]

The operating company and the holding are older than the channel. The Gazprom-Media release describes the sports division into which the new channel was placed as already running twelve off-air sports channels and the Sportbox.ru portal at the time of the announcement, so the channel's start date is not the start date of the business that carries it.[8] No founding date for ООО «Национальный спортивный телеканал» itself could be retrieved.

Why does Match TV matter in Russia's sport?

The first of three documented grounds is distribution: a place on the annexed list to Presidential Decree No. 715 means the channel is carried free to air across Russian territory as part of the first multiplex, so its reach does not depend on a subscription.[2][1]

The second is the rights portfolio. The domestic football and ice hockey competitions, the VTB United League, UFC and a run of Olympic-sport world championships have all appeared on the channel, and it carried 48 group-stage matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.[3][4]

The third is measured pick-up by other media. Medialogia's sectoral rating of sports media for 1 April to 30 June 2026 places Матч ТВ first of its twenty entries with a citation index of 4,362.94, ahead of Спорт-Экспресс at 2,493.45 and Championat.com at 2,256.64; the channel's website appears separately at 103.84. Medialogia states that the index is built from more than 111,000 sources and that an algorithm removes systematic and anomalous cross-citation. A citation index counts how often other media quote an outlet; it is not an audience measure.[6]
