What is Listín Diario?

Listín Diario is a Santo Domingo daily newspaper. Its own site gives the publisher as EDITORA LISTIN DIARIO, S.A., at Paseo de los Periodistas #52 in Santo Domingo, and carries the sport desk under the section name El Deporte.[2]

The paper's account of itself is that the first issue appeared on 1 August 1889 under the title Listín Diario Marítimo, that its founder was Arturo J. Pellerano Alfau, and that after an interruption of more than two decades it reappeared on 1 August 1963.[1] Those are the paper's own statements about its own history and are reported here as such.

On the wider market it sits in, Reporters Without Borders writes of the Dominican Republic that “However, the concentration of media ownership in the hands of a few private groups, such as Grupo Corripio, has raised concerns regarding pluralism and editorial independence.”.[5] The organisation places the country 44th of 180 in its 2026 World Press Freedom Index with a score of 69.73.[5]

What does Listín Diario cover?

The sport desk is organised by sport. El Deporte's own index carries Guía Deportiva, Béisbol, Baloncesto, Voleibol, Fútbol, La Pizarra, Boxeo, Tenis, Golf, Fórmula 1, Hípica and Olimpismo.[3]

The mix on a single retrieved day ran across the domestic and the international game: items on the Dominican women's volleyball team, on a match between Cibao and Salcedo in the domestic football championship, on basketball at Mauricio Báez, on tennis at the US Open and on Major League Baseball players.[3]

Domestic competition reporting is part of the desk's routine output. On 30 June 2026 the paper reported that the Liga Dominicana de Fútbol's Apertura would begin on the weekend of 22 August 2026, named the eight clubs — Salcedo FC, Cibao FC, Delfines del Este, Moca FC, Atlántico FC, OyM FC, Atlético Vega Real and Jarabacoa FC — and set out a format of fourteen matches in each of the Apertura and the Clausura, with the top four of each regular phase reaching semi-finals.[4]

How large is Listín Diario's audience?

No audited circulation figure and no audited audience currency for the Dominican newspaper market could be retrieved for this page, and the paper publishes none on its own site; the institutional pages it links carry a history and a mission statement rather than a readership number.[1][2]

Traffic estimators are not audited measurement and no estimator reading is given here. What can be stated from the site itself is publication frequency and currency: the El Deporte index carried items dated to within days of retrieval on 23 September 2026.[3]

Since when has Listín Diario existed?

The paper's history page dates the first issue to 1 August 1889, in Santo Domingo, under the title Listín Diario Marítimo, and names Arturo J. Pellerano Alfau as its founder.[1] The same page records an interruption of more than two decades and a reappearance on 1 August 1963.[1]

Both dates are the paper's own account of its own founding and continuity, and no independent instrument confirming either was retrieved for this page. The publishing company named on the current site is EDITORA LISTIN DIARIO, S.A.[2]

The two dates are different events and are kept apart here: 1889 is a first issue and 1963 a reappearance after an interruption, and the paper's own page treats them separately rather than as one continuous run.[1] Nothing retrieved establishes the length of the interruption beyond the paper's own phrase of more than two decades.[1]

Why does Listín Diario matter in Dominican Republic's sport?

The paper carries a standing sport desk with named subsections for the sports that have national federations, which makes it a dated record of domestic competition alongside international coverage: its 30 June 2026 report of the Liga Dominicana de Fútbol calendar gave the season's start date, its eight clubs and its match format.[4][3]

It publishes across the sports that carry the country's Olympic and continental record — athletics, boxing, volleyball and baseball among them — under a dedicated Olimpismo heading.[3]

The section is both a results file and an opinion page: the index carries named strands, Guía Deportiva and La Pizarra among them, beside the sport-by-sport headings, and on the day retrieved it ran an item on a proposed discussion of a salary scale dated 11 September 2026 alongside straight match reporting.[3]

Because the desk runs separate Voleibol, Boxeo, Olimpismo and Hípica headings, the sports that carry the country's continental and Olympic record are covered under their own names rather than folded into a general file.[3]

Reporters Without Borders' assessment of ownership concentration in the Dominican market, quoted above, is the context in which any national title's independence is discussed, and it is RSF's characterisation rather than this page's.[5]
