What is Líder en Deportes?

Líder en Deportes, usually shortened to Líder, is a Venezuelan sports title published from Caracas within Grupo Últimas Noticias. Its site footer describes it as “la publicación impresa y digital líder en deportes de Venezuela”, a description the outlet applies to itself.[1] It is a tabloid-format sports paper in the same stable as the general daily Últimas Noticias and the business title El Mundo Economía y Negocios.[2]

The title sits at the general end of the sports market rather than the specialist end: its sections run Venezuelan and North American baseball, European and domestic football, basketball, horse racing, cycling, motor sport, boxing, tennis and esports, with an opinion column strand and a video desk.[1] The Institute of Press and Society of Venezuela recorded it in 2021 as one of two tabloids still printing six days a week in metropolitan Caracas, with Últimas Noticias.[4]

What does Líder en Deportes cover?

Líder covers the full domestic and imported sports calendar that Venezuelan readers follow. Its own director put the editorial premise directly in a 2020 interview: “Los lectores venezolanos tienen interés no solo por el fútbol, sino por el béisbol de Grandes Ligas, el boxeo, la NBA y la F1”.[6] The site's baseball section carries Venezuelan professional league, Major League Baseball and Mexican league coverage; the football section is split between the domestic championship, the women's game and the European competitions.[1]

It is a reporting outlet rather than a records service: it publishes match coverage, transfer and roster news, opinion and video, but not an official statistical database. The site's footer carries a Major League Baseball logo indicating a content relationship with the North American league.[1] General news, politics and business are handled by the group's other titles rather than by Líder.[2]

What are Líder en Deportes's reach and standing?

No audited circulation figure for Líder could be retrieved for this page. The figure that is available concerns its stablemate: IPYS Venezuela's profile of the former owner Cadena Capriles recorded Últimas Noticias at 210,000 copies a day and described it as “uno de los periódicos de mayor circulación en el país”, with Líder en Deportes and El Mundo Economía y Negocios as the other two newspapers in the group.[2] That places Líder inside the country's largest newspaper publishing house rather than establishing its own print run.

For print survival the evidence is IPYS Venezuela's April 2021 count, which named Líder as one of two tabloids still printing six days a week in metropolitan Caracas, with Últimas Noticias, at a point when 20 printed newspapers remained nationally.[4] The front-page archive Kiosko.net holds Líder covers up to 28 May 2025 and none after that date, which is a limit of that archive rather than a documented closure of the print edition.[5] The digital title has continued publishing through 2026.[1]

Since when?

Líder was launched as part of Cadena Capriles, the Caracas publishing house that also produced Últimas Noticias and El Mundo Economía y Negocios.[2] Its director has said the title began “in alliance with Marca”, the Spanish sports daily, which supported the launch editorially.[6]

The ownership change is dated. El Impulso reported on 25 October 2013 that the group had begun operating under Latam Media Holding the previous day, naming the buyer as a company held by the British Hanson Group, with Líder named among the titles transferred and the existing editorial directors ratified in post.[3] IPYS Venezuela records the transaction at 614.8 million bolívares, the purchaser of record as Latam Media Holding — a company it states was registered in Curaçao on 26 September 2013, one month before the purchase — and reports that Banco Occidental de Descuento financed the acquisition and designated two board members. IPYS also states that the price exceeded the British company's own net worth 47 times over.[2] The group has published as Grupo Últimas Noticias since.[1]

Why does Líder en Deportes matter in Venezuela's sport?

Líder is one of two Venezuelan sports newspapers with national standing, and the only one inside the country's largest general newspaper group. Coverage in Líder therefore carries the distribution and archive of Grupo Últimas Noticias behind it, and its material is republished on the group's general title.[2][1] For Venezuelan football in particular it is a standing reference: its domestic championship section runs the fixture calendars and results that other Venezuelan outlets cite.

It also matters because it kept printing. IPYS Venezuela's 2021 review of the printed press counted 20 surviving newspapers against 130 on its register, recorded that 110 printed outlets had ceased circulation since 2009 and that ten states had lost printed newspapers entirely — and named Líder as one of two tabloids still printing six days a week in metropolitan Caracas, with Últimas Noticias.[4] In a market that contracted that far, a sports daily that continued to appear is a meaningful marker of national reach.
