What is L’essentiel?

L'essentiel is a free daily newspaper printed in French. Its contact page gives the publisher as Edita SA, a société anonyme at 115a, rue Émile Mark, Differdange, registered as RCS Luxembourg B129 294.[1] The Euromedia Ownership Monitor's Luxembourg report of December 2025 states: “The most successful organ born of this international alliance is the free daily L'essentiel, set up with the Swiss company TX Group AG (previously Tamedia), which is also in charge of 20 Minutes, a free paper in the Swiss Confederation”.[3]

On language, the same report states: “L'essentiel, printed in French and read mostly by commuting Luxembourg citizens, foreign residents, and cross-border workers, has become the only daily with a larger audience than the German-language Luxemburger Wort”. It states that its website is “available in French, German, and recently also in English”.[3] On 26 September 2026 the site offered French and German editions.[2]

What does L’essentiel cover?

L'essentiel is a general daily with a sport section; on 26 September 2026 its French home page carried live match items filed under its football section for the UEFA Nations League.[2] The membership list of sportspress.lu, the association of sports journalists, dated 25 February 2026, includes members from L'Essentiel among its journalists.[6]

The same contact page states: “Radio: L'essentiel Radio opérée par RadioLux SA, détenue à 70% par Edita SA”.[1] IP Luxembourg's publication of the TRAIL 2026-I study lists a station named L'essentiel Radio.[7]

How large is L’essentiel’s audience?

Readership in Luxembourg's press is measured by ILRES, whose Étude Presse 2025 was commissioned by the publishers Mediahuis, Edita and Editpress; Adada.lu reported that it surveyed 3,520 residents and 806 cross-border workers, and that it replaced the Plurimédia survey suspended in 2023. Adada.lu reported for the market as a whole that daily print newspapers reached 50.7 per cent of residents, and print with websites 67.4 per cent; it also reported that “l'État ne participe plus au financement de ces nouvelles études d'audience”, the State no longer contributing to their cost.[4] L'essentiel described the study as “menée par ILRES avec Kantar Belgium et des experts du CIM (Belgique)”, and gave its sample as “Plus de 4 300 personnes, résidentes (3 520) et frontalières (806)”. Its report also states: “Deux personnes sur trois (67,4%) parmi les résidents s'informent grâce à la presse papier et ses sites Internet.” Those are the publisher's report of the study.[5]

L'essentiel reported the results for its own titles on 30 September 2025. And it wrote: “Au total, 379 800 personnes (uniques) consultent quotidiennement nos différents médias.”[5] These are the publisher's own report of the study; ILRES's own publication could not be retrieved. The headline of that report calls L'essentiel the country's first newspaper; that is the publisher's claim.[5]

Since when has L’essentiel existed?

The government's information service, in its overview of Luxembourg media of January 2013, states: “En octobre 2007 paraissait le premier numéro de L'Essentiel, journal francophone édité par une co-entreprise de l'éditeur luxembourgeois Editpress et Tamedia, depuis 1999 l'éditeur du gratuit suisse 20 Minuten.”[8] That is, the first issue appeared in October 2007, published by a joint venture of Editpress and Tamedia; that was the government's account of the position in 2013.

The Euromedia Ownership Monitor, in December 2025, describes Edita as the company “which publishes L'essentiel (13.3 million euros in 2023)”, a turnover figure it takes from the business registers.[3] The contact page retrieved on 26 September 2026 names Edita SA as publisher.[1]

Why does L’essentiel matter in Luxembourg's sport?

It is a French-language daily in a multilingual market, and in the publisher's report of the 2025 press study it had 267,100 daily readers, including cross-border workers.[5] Its sports journalists are members of the national sports journalists' association.[6]

Two monitoring bodies place it in the market. Reporters Without Borders, in its 2026 entry, states: “The second most-read daily, L'Essentiel, is free.”[9] The Euromedia Ownership Monitor states that its website “attracts more visitors than that of RTL (197,000 in 2022)”.[3] Those are the two bodies' words and figures, and they rest on different measures and years.

On the economics of the press it belongs to, Reporters Without Borders states: “The leading daily newspapers have seen a decline in subscriptions and advertising in recent years, which has forced them to reorient their activities. In the name of pluralism, a law passed in 2021 provides each journalist with 30,000 euros a year in state aid and every publication with a lump sum of 200,000 euros.” The same entry states: “For the most part, the media operate independently and journalists enjoy plenty of freedom from political power.”[9]
