What is La Prensa?

La Prensa is a Nicaraguan daily newspaper. Its site carries the line “© Editorial La Prensa S.A. Todos los derechos reservados”, and its sports news is published on the path laprensani.com/deportes of the parent domain.[1] In its editorial of 2 January 2026 it calls itself “LA PRENSA, El Diario de los Nicaragüenses”.[2]

Reporters Without Borders, in the political-context section of its 2026 entry for Nicaragua, states: “In 2021, the national police stormed, without a warrant, the premises of the daily newspaper La Prensa, which has been unable to produce a print edition ever since and which continues to be occupied.”[3]

Where it operates from. EFE reported on 2 March 2026, in a dispatch published by Confidencial, that most of La Prensa's newsroom is in exile; the words it uses are “la mayoría de su redacción en el exilio”.[4] La Prensa's own editorial of 2 January 2026 states that it will mark its centenary “en el exilio”.[2] Neither the dispatch nor the editorial, as retrieved, names the country from which the newsroom works, and no other retrieved source was found to name it.

What does La Prensa cover?

As retrieved on 26 September 2026, the sports section's ten most recent items were dated 25 and 26 September 2026 and covered baseball, football, boxing and basketball.[1]

Domestic baseball. It led with “Estelí agrega al mejor brazo del Pomares a su staff de pitcheo para las semifinales”, on the semi-finals of the national championship, and carried “Estelí terminó de sepultar a Matagalpa y se cita con Granada en las semifinales”.[1]

National teams. On 26 September 2026 it reported from the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup in Mexico that the Nicaraguan team “terminaron noqueados 10-0 en cinco episodios” against the United States.[6] On 25 September 2026 it set out what Nicaragua needed to qualify for the 2027 Gold Cup after losing its opening Concacaf Nations League match in the Dominican Republic, with Curaçao next.[7]

Boxing. On 25 September 2026 it recalled that Román González's title fight against Yutaka Niida “se realizó el 15 de septiembre del 2008, en Yokohama, Japón”.[8]

International sport. The same section carried Major League Baseball, the NBA, the French national football team and a ruling on Manchester City.[1]

How large is La Prensa's audience?

No audited circulation, readership or web-traffic figure for La Prensa was retrieved, and no Nicaraguan audience-measurement body publishing per-title figures was found. The articles on its centenary retrieved from Infobae and EFE give no audience figure either.[4][5]

Reporters Without Borders makes a general statement about outlets of its kind: “Independent online outlets reporting from exile continue to reach a significant audience within Nicaragua despite the obstacles.” The statement does not name La Prensa or give a figure.[3]

Because it has produced no print edition since 2021, according to Reporters Without Borders, its current output is the website.[3]

Since when has La Prensa existed?

La Prensa's editorial of 2 January 2026, headed “2026 es el año del centenario de LA PRENSA”, states: “LA PRENSA salió por primera vez a la luz pública el martes 2 de marzo de 1926.”[2] The Infobae article of 1 March 2026 gives the same date: “El diario La Prensa de Nicaragua fue fundado el 2 de marzo de 1926”. That article is by a named author and repeats the date the paper gives; no independent record of the first issue was retrieved.[5]

2021. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, its Special Rapporteurship for Freedom of Expression and the regional office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reported on 18 August 2021: “Finalmente, el 13 de agosto, la Policía Nacional y el Ministerio Público allanaron las instalaciones del diario La Prensa, incautaron bienes materiales y detuvieron al día siguiente a su gerente general, Juan Lorenzo Holmann Chamorro, en el marco de una investigación por presuntos delitos de defraudación aduanera, lavado de dinero, bienes y activos.” The same statement records that on 12 August the paper itself had denounced that the retention of printing paper by the customs authority for more than 20 days “lo habría obligado a detener la publicación de su edición impresa y continuar únicamente su edición digital”.[9]

Reporters Without Borders records the premises as still occupied in its 2026 entry.[3]

Why does La Prensa matter in Nicaragua's sport?

Reporters Without Borders names La Prensa in its 2026 entry for Nicaragua, and on 26 September 2026 its sports section led with the semi-finals of the national baseball championship.[3][1]

Its sports pages on 26 September 2026 covered the national teams at WBSC and Concacaf events, the domestic championship, and Nicaraguan boxing's record, from a newsroom that EFE describes as mostly in exile.[6][7][4]

The monitors' records of the state action against it are set out above: the search of its premises on 13 August 2021, as reported by the IACHR, its Special Rapporteurship and the regional UN office, and the continuing occupation and absence of a print edition, as reported by Reporters Without Borders.[9][3]
