What is La Prensa?
La Prensa is a general daily newspaper published in San Pedro Sula. Its own page states: “La Prensa forma parte de Organización Publicitaria, S.A. (Grupo Opsa)”, and names Jorge Canahuati Larach as president.[2] That is the outlet's own statement, read on 26 September 2026; no register of media ownership in Honduras was retrieved.
The group's titles include the sports daily Diez and the Tegucigalpa daily El Heraldo, whose footer lists Diez, La Prensa, Revista Estilo, Buen Provecho and Revista E&N as Grupo OPSA publications.[3] La Prensa wrote in 2010 that OPSA “desde su nacimiento es la casa editora de LA PRENSA y diario Diez”.[4]
Its sports coverage is on a path of the parent site, laprensa.hn/deportes, not on a separate domain.[1]
What does La Prensa cover?
As retrieved on 26 September 2026, the sports path led with international football items, among them a match between England and Spain at Wembley and an injury to a Real Madrid forward, and with Honduran national-team items, among them comments by national-team players and staff. No time stamps were shown on the headlines; the print-edition panel on the same page was dated “viernes 25 de sep de 2026”.[1]
The domestic league that the paper's sister title Diez covers in its own sections is the Liga Hondubet, which lists twelve clubs for the Apertura 2026-2027, among them Real España, Marathón, Platense and Choloma in its northern group.[5]
Beyond the latest-news path, the site's menu offers sports photo galleries and sports videos.[1] It also keeps a topic archive on Honduran athletes; as retrieved on 26 September 2026 that archive led with an item headed “Asfura juramenta a 170 atletas hondureños para los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe 2026”, concerning the national delegation to the Central American and Caribbean Games. The item's date was not shown.[7]
The paper's own page describes its digital transformation and its presence on social networks; it does not break down its audience by section, so no figure for its sport output is given.[2]
How large is La Prensa's audience?
No television-audience currency, audited readership survey or web audit covering Honduran outlets was found, and the broadcasting market study posted by the competition authority, the Comisión para la Defensa y Promoción de la Competencia (CDPC), could not be retrieved. No audited figure for La Prensa was found.
La Prensa's own page states that its digital transformation “ha permitido que el medio conecte con más de 4 millones de usuarios únicos cada mes”, that “el diario líder registra más de 25 millones de páginas vistas”, and that “el medio cuenta con un sólido respaldo de más de 5.3 millones de seguidores” on social networks. The page names no measuring body and gives no date for the figures. They are the outlet's own claims, and the description of itself as “el diario líder” is its own.[2]
In 2010 the group described La Prensa as the newspaper with the largest circulation in the country; that is also its own account, fifteen years old, with no measuring body named.[4]
Since when has La Prensa existed?
La Prensa's own page states: “Se fundó el 26 de octubre de 1964 en la ciudad de San Pedro Sula.”[2]
The group's 2010 account places the origins of the publishing group in the same year: “Los inicios de este grupo editorial se ubican en 1964, cuando diario LA PRENSA” was founded, and it dates El Heraldo fifteen years later, to 1979, and Diez to May 2006.[4] Both accounts come from the same publisher and agree on 1964.
Why does La Prensa matter in Honduras's sport?
Reporters Without Borders, in its 2026 World Press Freedom Index, places Honduras 132nd of 180 and writes: “The country's leading papers are La Prensa, El Heraldo and La Tribuna.” The same entry opens: “Media pluralism has been undermined by multinational corporations taking over major outlets and political and business leaders acquiring local newsrooms.” It continues that digital investigative journalism “has become more established, but these reporters are exposed to pressure from local authorities and online harassment.” It closes: “At the local level, community radio stations and media outlets continue to operate despite being highly vulnerable due to their precarious financial situation and the presence of armed groups.”[6] Those are the monitor's statements, and it names no owner of La Prensa.
La Prensa is a general daily with sport as one section, published by the group that also publishes the sports daily Diez.[2][4] It was publishing sports news on 26 September 2026.[1]
