What is La Prensa Gráfica?

La Prensa Gráfica is a daily newspaper published in San Salvador. The Grupo de Diarios América (GDA), an association of Latin American newspapers, lists it as its member for El Salvador, alongside titles such as La Nación of Costa Rica and El Tiempo of Colombia.[1] Reporters Without Borders, in its 2026 country entry, names it among El Salvador's traditional outlets: “There is a combination of traditional outlets, mostly print (El Diario de Hoy, La Prensa Gráfica, El Mundo)”.[2]

Its sports coverage is published on the path laprensagrafica.com/deportes of the parent site.[5] The same group publishes a separate sports daily, El Gráfico, described below.[4]

Status on 26 September 2026. The newspaper's current pages could not be read on 26 September 2026: its sports and latest-news paths are closed to automated retrieval, and its home page returned only older items. The GDA's member list, retrieved that day, still lists it.[1] The author page of La Nación of Costa Rica, a fellow GDA member, carries items credited to La Prensa Gráfica during 2026, the most recent dated 21 July 2026.[6]

What does La Prensa Gráfica cover?

Its sports path carries Salvadoran and international football and the governance of the sport. On 20 July 2022 it reported that FIFA had called an order of the Tribunal de Disciplina, Ética y Apelaciones del Deporte, which directed the national sports institute INDES to set up a Comisión Normalizadora at the football federation FESFUT, “una injerencia indebida en los estatutos de la federación”, and that FIFA had set a deadline of 25 July.[5]

Items credited to La Prensa Gráfica on La Nación's author page in 2026 include, on 10 June 2026, a report on charges brought against a former Salvadoran national-team player, alongside regional news on transport and weather.[6]

El Gráfico. La Prensa Gráfica's own report of El Gráfico's fifteenth anniversary, dated 16 February 2019 in its address, dates the sports daily's first appearance to 16 February 2004 and states that since then “han pasado cuatro Juegos Olímpicos, cuatro Mundiales, cuatro Eurocopas, 13 Ligas de Campeones”, among other events. That report is the group's own account of its own title.[4] El Gráfico's site could not be read on 26 September 2026.

How large is La Prensa Gráfica's audience?

No audited circulation or readership figure for any Salvadoran newspaper was retrieved, and no press audience-measurement body for El Salvador was found. That is a limit of the evidence.

The figures available are the paper's own, as reported. El Nacional of Venezuela, another GDA member, wrote in its article on the 110th anniversary, on 16 May 2025: “En 25 años, su página web tiene una audiencia de 26 millones de páginas vistas y más de 7 millones de seguidores en redes sociales.”[3] The sentence gives no period of measurement beyond the 25 years, and no measuring body.

For El Gráfico, the 2019 anniversary report states: “Contamos ya con más de 1 millón y medio de seguidores, una cifra que aumenta día a día”, a social-media following of more than one and a half million.[4] That is the group's claim about its own title, with no measuring body, and is not adopted here.

Since when has La Prensa Gráfica existed?

El Nacional's anniversary article states that the paper was “fundado el 10 de mayo de 1915 por los hermanos Antonio y José Dutriz.” It records that on 5 November 1939 José Quetglas became director and continues: “Ese mismo año, La Prensa se unió a El Gráfico para conformar lo que se conoce hasta el día de hoy como La Prensa Gráfica.”[3] The founding date is therefore La Prensa's, and the current name dates from 1939, as that article gives them.

The same article traces the paper's direction through later members of the Dutriz family, most recently from 2014. No ownership register or company filing was retrieved, so ownership is not stated here beyond that account of May 2025.[3]

The sports daily El Gráfico, as the group's 2019 report gives it, dates from 16 February 2004. It shares its name with the title that merged into La Prensa Gráfica in 1939; the two are separate publications of different dates.[4][3]

Why does La Prensa Gráfica matter in El Salvador's sport?

It is El Salvador's member of the Grupo de Diarios América, and Reporters Without Borders names it as one of three traditional, mostly print, outlets in its 2026 description of the Salvadoran media landscape.[1][2] Its group publishes El Gráfico, a daily given over to sport since 2004, according to the group's own account.[4]

Its reporting has recorded dated decisions in the governance of Salvadoran football, among them FIFA's warning of July 2022 over the order to install a Comisión Normalizadora at FESFUT.[5] RSF ranked El Salvador 143rd of 180 countries in its 2026 index, with a score of 38.88.[2]
