What is ΚΥΠΕ?
ΚΥΠΕ is the news agency of the Republic of Cyprus, and it exists by statute. The Ο περί Κυπριακού Πρακτορείου Ειδήσεων Νόμος του 1989 (87/1989) is the principal law, and CyLaw's index for it records eight amending laws, from N. 131(I)/1999 through N. 146(I)/2000, N. 55(I)/2003, N. 34(I)/2004, N. 51(I)/2005, N. 27(I)/2009 and N. 182(I)/2011 to N. 50(I)/2022, all incorporated in the consolidated text.[1] Article 5 of that text opens the agency's duties and powers with the words “Το Πρακτορείο έχει τα ακόλουθα καθήκοντα και εξουσίες:” and enumerates them, among them the collection and dissemination of news, the establishment of news bureaux, the acquisition of communications infrastructure and the maintenance of archives.[2]
On its own site the agency gives its names as Κυπριακό Πρακτορείο Ειδήσεων and Cyprus News Agency, and abbreviates them ΚΥΠΕ and CNA.[3]
What does ΚΥΠΕ cover?
The agency's site organises its output into standing categories — politics, economy, society, domestic affairs, Europe, international news, science and sport — and delivers them as articles, photo galleries and video.[3] Sport is one of those categories rather than a separate title, so the agency's sports output reaches readers mainly through the outlets that subscribe to it.
It publishes in four languages: Greek, English, Turkish and Arabic.[3] Two of those are the languages the state itself works in — article 3(1) of Το Σύνταγμα της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας provides that “αι επίσημοι γλώσσαι της Δημοκρατίας είναι η ελληνική και η τουρκική”.[4]
How large is ΚΥΠΕ's audience?
No audited audience figure for the agency could be retrieved for this page. The recognised measurement currency in the Cypriot market is television audience measurement, run by AGB (Cyprus) Ltd from a panel of about 450 households and 981 people meters covering 1,349 persons aged 4 and over, and its subscriber list is made up of advertising agencies and television stations rather than agencies of record.[5] A news agency's reach is a wholesale reach, carried by its subscribing outlets, and no body publishing an audited figure for it was found.
The agency's own site, as retrieved on 23 September 2026, publishes no subscriber count, no traffic figure and no statement of its own reach.[3] Traffic estimators are not audited measurement and no figure from one is given here.
Since when has ΚΥΠΕ existed?
The statute that constitutes the agency is dated 1989 and numbered 87/1989, and that is the date this page carries.[1] The agency's own pages retrieved for this page state no founding date and no operational start date, so none is adopted here.[3] Founded, constituted and recognised are different dates, and only the statutory one is documented here.
The amending record runs from 1999 to 2022, the most recent being N. 50(I)/2022, so the framework the agency works under has been revised repeatedly within the period in which it has been operating.[1]
Three dates are commonly run together for bodies of this kind, and only one of them is documented here. The law that constitutes the agency is dated 1989; the date on which it first issued copy, and the existence or otherwise of any predecessor service, are not stated on the statutory index or on the agency's own pages retrieved for this page.[1][3] Where a body publishes no account of its own beginnings, this page carries the statutory date and says which date it is.
Why does ΚΥΠΕ matter in Cyprus's sport?
Because it is the wholesale layer. Its statutory functions under article 5 are the collection and dissemination of news and the running of bureaux, which is the machinery by which a result, a federation statement or a governing-body decision reaches the country's other outlets at once.[2] Its four publishing languages mean the same item is issued in Greek, English, Turkish and Arabic.[3]
On the market it works in, the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom's Media Pluralism Monitor for Cyprus, 2026 edition, states that “there is a high concentration in the market share of service providers in the audio-visual and the press, which is affecting plurality of information resources”, and records that between July 2023 and December 2025 there were “26 significant shareholding and ownership changes in radio and television, complete unknown to the public”; it scores Market Plurality at 91 per cent and the country's overall risk at 68 per cent.[6] Reporters Without Borders places Cyprus 80th of 180 in its 2026 Press Freedom Index with a score of 56.91.[7] Both are reported here as those bodies published them.
