What is Kanal 5?
Kanal 5 is a national commercial television broadcaster in North Macedonia. Its site gives its sport page the title “Спорт - Канал 5” and carries the line “Канал 5 © 2026”.[1]
The media regulator's report on media ownership in 2025 lists it among the five terrestrial television stations at state level and states: “Сопственик на ТВ Канал 5 е физичкото лице Емил Стојменов, со удел од 100 %.” The report takes shareholder data from the Central Registry as at 5 May 2025.[2] No later ownership change was found in the regulator's publications retrieved.
The channel describes itself as “Канал 5 телевизија како една од водечките телевизиски куќи во Македонија, од 1998 година на малите екрани до гледање онлајн денес”.[3] That is its own description.
What does Kanal 5 cover?
When retrieved on 24 September 2026, the sport page's most recent items, marked as between nine hours and a day old, were international football and mixed martial arts: Cristiano Ronaldo, the president of La Liga, Kylian Mbappé and Liverpool, and a UFC champion. Two of those items concerned Mbappé's case for the Ballon d'Or and his near move to Liverpool in 2016, and one Andrew Robertson's account of Liverpool's season.[1]
Older items on the same page concerned the Olympic torch relay for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Italy and the UEFA Nations League.[1] The retrieved page carried no item on a domestic league; that is a reading of one day's page and not a statement about the channel's programming.
The site's Спорт menu lists football, basketball, handball, Formula racing, skiing, tennis, other sports and the Olympic Games as subsections, alongside a Програма schedule and Веб ТВ.[4]
The regulator's programme supervision covered Kanal 5. The regulator's regular programme supervision of 1 April 2025 covered TV Alsat-M, TV Telma, TV Alfa, TV Kanal 5 and TV Sitel; it checked commercial communications, the protection of minors, quiz and contest rules, premium-rate telephone services and gaming broadcasts, and reported: “Со надзорот не се констатирани прекршувања од Законот за аудио и аудиовизуелни медиумски услуги”.[5]
How large is Kanal 5's audience?
Television audience figures in North Macedonia were not retrieved from an audited audience currency, and the regulator's ownership report retrieved publishes none per channel.[2] The regulator's 2024 market analysis carries a chart of shares of total viewing, “Удел во вкупната гледаност”, without naming its data source; its values could not be read consistently and are not given here.[6] The most recent per-channel figure retrieved is a regulator survey for the first quarter of 2020, reported by Meta.mk on 12 May 2020: by computer-assisted telephone interview of 2,400 respondents, 54.42 per cent said they had watched Kanal 5, against 60.5 per cent for Sitel, 39.5 per cent for МТВ 1, 32.21 per cent for Telma, 26.88 per cent for Alfa and 18.79 per cent for Alsat-M.[7] That is reported viewing in one quarter six years before the build date, as a news site reported it, and not a measured audience share.
The regulator's 2024 market analysis gives Kanal 5's 2024 revenues as MKD 281.83 million in its Table 9 of the national terrestrial channels.[6] Revenue is not audience. The regulator's announcement of 26 September 2025 gives the industry's total revenues in 2024 as MKD 3,219.21 million and the combined revenues of all commercial television stations as MKD 1,607.39 million.[8]
Since when has Kanal 5 existed?
The channel's own page gives 1998: “од 1998 година на малите екрани”.[3] That is the channel's statement about itself; the regulator's ownership report retrieved gives no founding year for it.[2]
Why does Kanal 5 matter in North Macedonia's sport?
Kanal 5 is one of the five national terrestrial channels in the regulator's records, owned by one natural person according to the regulator's 2025 report.[2] The regulator's 2024 revenue table gives it MKD 281.83 million.[6] In the 2020 survey reported by Meta.mk, 54.42 per cent of respondents said they had watched it.[7]
Its site's Спорт menu gives handball and basketball their own subsections alongside football.[4]
Reporters Without Borders, in its 2026 World Press Freedom Index entry, ranks North Macedonia 45th of 180 with a score of 69.49. It states: “Although certain types of media concentration are prohibited by law, the editorial staff of some of the major TV channels are exposed to economic pressures from their owners.” It also states: “The two largest parties (in power and in opposition) have created parallel media systems over which they exert their political and economic influence.”[9] Those are RSF's characterisations of the sector; RSF does not name a channel in them. RSF's entry also states: “Although television is the dominant source of information, online media play an important role.”[9]
