What is Index.hr?
Index.hr is a Croatian news portal. Its impressum names the publisher as “Index promocija d.o.o.”, seated at “Radnička cesta 41, 10 000 Zagreb, Hrvatska” with the tax number 37502434016, and lists Andreja Hudika as “glavna urednica” and Marko Jerleković as editor of the Sport section.[1]
The impressum discloses no owner and no ownership shares.[1] That is not unusual in this market on the monitors' own account: the Euromedia Ownership Monitor's Croatia report, 2025 edition, published in December 2025, describes Index.hr as “one of the most visited digital portals” without naming an owner, and reports across the market that “watchdogs such as Gong (2024) warned that hidden ownership remains a serious risk” and that the “European Commission's 2024 and 2025 Rule of Law Reports underlined that ultimate ownership structures are not always clear”.[2] The Media Pluralism Monitor for Croatia, 2026 edition, records the launch of a Media Ownership and Financing Database in April 2025 as having “improved accessibility to ownership structures and financial flows.”[3] No owner is named here because none could be retrieved from a source opened for this page.
What does Index.hr cover?
The portal is general-interest, and its sport desk is a section within it rather than a separate title. The section is organised into Nogomet, Dinamo, Hajduk, SHNL, Košarka, Borilački sportovi and Ostali sportovi — football, the two clubs of the Vječni derbi, the domestic league, basketball, combat sports and other sports — and was running items dated the same day when it was checked for this page.[4]
The desk also reports audience and rights stories about sport rather than only results: its coverage of the 2025 IHF Men's World Championship included a report that the Croatia–Argentina match of 18 January 2025 drew 1,150,000 viewers and a 42 per cent share on RTL, figures the article attributed to a statement by RTL.[5] The attribution travels with the number: the measurement is the broadcaster's, reported by the portal.
How large is Index.hr's audience?
No audited audience figure for Index.hr could be retrieved for this page. Croatia now has a single recognised web currency, which is where such a figure would come from: the Hrvatska udruga digitalnih izdavača announced on 15 July 2024 that after a tender it had selected Ipsos's DotMetrics as the provider of standardised web traffic measurement for Croatian portals, under an agreement taking effect on 1 January 2025 for an initial two-year term with the possibility of extension.[6] Traffic estimators are not audited measurement and no estimate is reproduced here.
What the monitoring bodies say about the market can be quoted. The Media Pluralism Monitor for Croatia, 2026 edition, scores Market Plurality at 60 per cent and finds that “market concentration remained extremely high in audiovisual markets and largely unmonitored in digital advertising and online news distribution.”[3] The Euromedia Ownership Monitor's 2025 Croatia report places Index.hr among “one of the most visited digital portals” in the country, which is that monitor's characterisation and carries no figure.[2]
Since when has Index.hr existed?
The site states on its own pages that it has published since 2002 — “Index od 2002. donosi vijesti bez kompromisa”.[1] That is the outlet's own claim about itself; no independent registration record fixing the date was retrieved for this page.
The publishing company named in the impressum is Index promocija d.o.o., with the tax number 37502434016.[1] The impressum does not state when that company was incorporated, and the two dates — first publication and incorporation — are not assumed to be the same.
Why does Index.hr matter in Croatia's sport?
It is one of the general news portals through which most Croatian readers meet sport coverage that is not a match broadcast, and its sport section is structured around the domestic calendar: separate desks for Dinamo, for Hajduk and for the SHNL sit alongside the general football desk.[4] Its coverage carries audience and rights reporting as well as results, attributed to the broadcasters that publish the numbers.[5]
On the questions of ownership and independence that govern how such a portal should be read, this page quotes the monitors rather than characterising. The Media Pluralism Monitor for Croatia, 2026 edition, gives an overall score of 53 per cent, Fundamental Protection 46 per cent, Market Plurality 60 per cent, Political Independence 51 per cent and Social Inclusiveness 55 per cent.[3] The Euromedia Ownership Monitor's Croatia report, 2025 edition, records that “ownership records are often incomplete or outdated, particularly for large corporate groups, and they seldom reveal the actual balance of power behind media companies”, and concludes that “while Croatia has advanced in formal transparency, the foundations of independent journalism remain fragile.”[2]
