What is Het Nieuwsblad?

Het Nieuwsblad is a Dutch-language daily newspaper. The Vlaamse Regulator voor de Media (VRM), the Flemish media regulator, lists it in the accessible version of its report Mediaconcentratie in Vlaanderen 2025 among the newspaper titles of Mediahuis: “De Standaard, Het Nieuwsblad, Gazet van Antwerpen als Het Belang van Limburg”. It lists De Morgen and Het Laatste Nieuws under DPG Media.[1]

The newspaper's own site, nieuwsblad.be, and the Mediahuis sites could not be retrieved. The title is Dutch-language.

What does Het Nieuwsblad cover?

Campaigns. PUB, the Belgian trade title, reported on 12 February 2024 that Nieuwsblad opened the sports year with a campaign by the agency FamousGrey under the line “De koers is van Ons”, which compared cycling with football and ran on television, in cinemas, in print, on radio and online.[3] PUB reported on 4 March 2026 a further campaign under the headline “Nieuwsblad & AKQA Brussels plaatsen respect op kop met 'Fandrien'”; the article body is for subscribers and was not read.[4]

The Omloop. The race's site states: “Omloop Nieuwsblad is part of Flanders Classics.” It describes the race as “traditionally the opening classic in the Flemish cycling spring”, starting in 't Kuipke in Ghent on 28 February. The same site carried an item on the 60th edition of the men's under-23 race of the same name.[5]

PUB's account of the 2024 campaign adds that its message was to support Belgian riders, named as Remco, Wout and Lotte, before cheering the Red Devils in the summer, and that the print advertisements used work by the photographers Ashley and Jered Gruber.[3]

How large is Het Nieuwsblad's audience?

Press audiences in Belgium are measured by the CIM, whose own site could not be retrieved; the figures below are the publisher's account of the CIM results as the trade press printed it, and the regulator's reading of sales.

PUB reported on 12 November 2024 on the CIM press study for “de periode van 1 september 2023 tot 31 mei 2024”. It printed: “Nieuwsblad vormt als nieuwsmerk met meer dan 1,5 nieuwsconsumenten per dag, de basis van het grote Mediahuisbereik.” The sentence as printed omits a unit; its context gives the figures in millions. The same article states that Nieuwsblad, De Standaard, Gazet van Antwerpen and Het Belang van Limburg “bereiken samen dagelijks meer dan 2,5 miljoen nieuwsconsumenten via de kranten, sites, apps en podcasts, goed voor 44 procent van alle Vlamingen (16+)”.[2] The article adds: “Mediahuis bevestigt opnieuw haar positie als marktleider in de Belgische nieuwsmarkt.” That is the group's own claim, and the article quotes Koen Verwee, chief executive of Mediahuis België: “Het vertrouwen dat onze titels door de jaren heen hebben opgebouwd, is vandaag relevanter dan ooit”. Those figures combine print and digital, and they are the group's reading of one wave of the study. A report by PUB on the next wave, dated 15 October 2025, is for subscribers and was not read.[6]

The VRM's 2025 report, comparing total newspaper sales in 2024 with earlier years, states: “De regionale kranten (Het Belang van Limburg, Gazet van Antwerpen) en Het Nieuwsblad zagen hun totale verkoop afnemen.” It adds that these titles “doen het ook het minst goed qua digitalisering van hun verkoop”.[1]

Since when has Het Nieuwsblad existed?

No founding date for the newspaper was retrieved from a source that could be read. What is dated is its position in the group: the VRM's 2025 report lists it as a Mediahuis title.[1] The same report records that in May 2025 SBS Media Belgium proposed a change to its shareholder structure under which Mediahuis would become its sole shareholder; that concerns the group's television interests, not the newspaper.[7]

Why does Het Nieuwsblad matter in Belgium's sport?

It is a Dutch-language daily of national circulation whose group reports it as reaching more than 1.5 million news consumers a day on the CIM study of 2023–24, and whose name is carried by the opening race of the Flemish cycling season.[2][5] Its 2024 campaign, as PUB described it, put cycling at the centre of the paper's sports year.[3]

Reporters Without Borders, in its 2026 entry for Belgium, states that the country's media markets “are concentrated in the hands of a few owners. This is especially true for the print market. A small number of companies owned by a handful of prominent families dominate the daily print media.”[8] The Media Pluralism Monitor's Belgium 2026 page gives Market Plurality a risk score of 68 per cent.[9] Those are the two bodies' assessments.
