What is Granma?

Granma is a Cuban newspaper. Prensa Latina, reporting on 20 February 2026, describes it as «the official organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba».[1] That description comes from another Cuban outlet and is reported here with its source rather than adopted in this page's own voice.

An independent description exists for the same relationship. MLB.com, reporting on 27 September 2013 on the decision of Cuba's Council of Ministers to let athletes contract with foreign leagues, identified the publication carrying that announcement as «Granma, the Communist Party newspaper».[2]

The paper publishes an English-language edition at a sub-domain of its own site, which identifies itself in its own copy as Granma International.[3][5] No masthead statement, publisher line or registered address could be retrieved from the pages of that edition consulted.

What does Granma cover?

The paper is a general daily, and its English edition carries a standing sports section. Items retrieved from that section covered Cuban baseball against the Baltimore Orioles, results at the Pan American judo championships, final results from the Cuba Cup in athletics, a Caribbean Series match won by Panama, the agreement between the Cuban Baseball Federation and Major League Baseball, a Youth Olympic triple jump title, a profile of a judo coach, the United States volleyball team in Havana, Cuban basketball players in the Salvadoran league, and a powerboat crossing from Key West to Havana.[4]

The page of that section that was served carried items across a wide span of years rather than a current run, so it evidences the range of subjects the section treats rather than the paper's current output; no publication date for the page itself was available.[4]

Beyond sport the same edition carries Cuban political, economic and international coverage, including foreign ministry press conferences, trade fairs and municipal elections.[5]

How large is Granma's audience?

No audited circulation, readership or audience figure for Granma could be retrieved from any source consulted, and no Cuban press-circulation audit body could be identified. No figure is estimated here.

What is available is a statement of distribution rather than of measured reach. Prensa Latina, reporting on 20 February 2026, states that Granma Internacional «circulates in some twenty countries in Europe, Asia, and Latin America», that it «has been reprinted in Germany, Argentina, and Brazil», and that «nationally, it is distributed to entities such as ministries, business groups, and hotels».[1] Those are claims about where copies go, not counts of copies sold or readers reached, and they are one Cuban outlet's account of another.

The paper's own pages consulted give no circulation, subscriber or traffic figure.[3] Commercial traffic estimators are not audited measurement and none is used here.

Since when has Granma existed?

Two dates are involved and they belong to two different editions. Prensa Latina, reporting on 20 February 2026, states that «in October 1965, Fidel Castro Ruz had announced the creation of the Granma newspaper», and separately that Granma Internacional was established in January 1966 during the Tricontinental Conference, debuting «in Spanish, English, and French».[1]

An announcement of a newspaper's creation and the date of its first issue are not the same thing, and the source consulted gives the first without the second for the domestic edition. No founding instrument, registration or first-issue masthead for either edition could be retrieved, and no date of any renaming is asserted here.

The paper was publishing at the date of research: the anniversary report of it is dated 20 February 2026.[1]

Why does Granma matter in Cuba's sport?

Decisions about Cuban sport have been announced in it. MLB.com reported on 27 September 2013 that a decision approved by Cuba's Council of Ministers, and announced in Granma, permitted athletes to take contracts in foreign leagues, subject to the condition that «they are in Cuba for the fundamental competitions of the year».[2] That places the paper in the chain between a government decision and its public record, which is a different function from reporting results.

It also carries results and event coverage in its own right, across baseball, judo, athletics, volleyball and basketball, and covers Cuban athletes competing outside Cuba.[4]

The institutional structure those announcements sit inside — the sports institute, the 2019 Constitution and Ley 179 of 2025 — is set out at Cuba, and the amateur and professional distinction the 2013 announcement turned on is at professional and amateur.
