What is Football Weekly?

Football Weekly is The Guardian’s football podcast, launched on 11 May 2006 as “The World Cup Show” with James Richardson and hosted since 2017 by Max Rushden, with Barry Glendenning as the constant. It is published by Guardian News & Media and has a sister show, Women’s Football Weekly.[1] [2] [3]

What does it cover?

The Premier League and European football, several episodes a week in season — five in the first eleven days of September 2026 — with a regular panel of the paper’s writers and correspondents: Sid Lowe, Nicky Bandini, Philippe Auclair, Robyn Cowen, Suzy Wrack among them.[1] [3]

What is its reach and standing?

No download figure is published. Its standing is the Football Supporters’ Association’s Podcast of the Year — won in 2021, 2022 and 2023, lost to The Football Ramble in 2024 and regained on 1 December 2025, when Women’s Football Weekly also won — in an award decided by more than 250,000 supporter votes.[2] [4]

Since when?

11 May 2006.[1]

Why does it matter in soccer?

Because it has run for two decades from a national newspaper and is the podcast supporters themselves have voted for most often. An appearance is a marker of profile in the English game; the show is not a results source.[1] [2]
