What is the FIFA World Ranking?

The FIFA World Ranking is the official ranking of the world's national teams — published for the men since December 1992 and for the women since 2003, and updated after each international window on FIFA's site.[1]

How does it work?

Since 2018 the men's ranking uses the Elo-based "SUM" method: teams gain or lose points per match according to result, match importance and the opponent's strength — World Cup knockouts weigh most. The women's ranking has used an Elo approach since its launch.[1][2]

Why does it matter?

It seeds the World Cup draw and confederation competitions, and stands as the official, dated record of every national team's standing — the sport's objective ladder at country level.[1][2]
