What is Expressen Sport?
Expressen Sport is the sport brand of Expressen, a Swedish evening newspaper. Sifo's reach report for ORVESTO Konsument 2026:1 lists it under that name in its Kvällspress table, and marks both it and Expressen with a footnote that reads: “Avser paketet EX/GT/KvP”.[1] The figures therefore relate to a package of Expressen, GT and Kvällsposten; the same table lists GT and Kvällsposten as print titles of their own.[1]
Ownership of the parent is on record from the state media authority. Mediemyndigheten's 2024 report on ownership and industry structure in the Swedish media market states: “Med storstadstidningarna (Di, DN, Expressen och HD-Sydsvenskan) och lokaltidningsföretagen Bonnier News Local samt Hall Media svarar Bonniers svenska tidningsrörelse för en omsättning på 6,8 miljarder kronor.”[3] That places Expressen in Bonnier's Swedish newspaper business as of that report.
Its editor is named in 2026 documents. Bonnier News releases of 6 March and 22 September 2026 quote Klas Granström as “chefredaktör på Expressen”, and Handbollsligan's own site gives him as “chefredaktör och ansvarig utgivare på Expressen”.[5][6][4]
What does Expressen Sport cover?
Expressen's own site could not be retrieved, so the coverage set out below is taken from its owner's releases and from a league's own site.
Its recent output includes live broadcasting. On 6 March 2026 Bonnier News announced a joint live-sport platform with Gota Media and Erna Media, stating: “På plattformen, som ligger under Expressen, har varje lokal titel en egen undersida med lokala livesändningar.”[5] The release lists what it carries: “Förutom Svenska Cupen sänds bland annat Elitserien i bandy, Svenska Basketligan herr, Elitettan, nationella tävlingar i längdskidor och skidskytte samt en mängd lokal sport.”[5]
Handbollsligan reported on 16 September 2026 that the league's rights had passed to Sportway in August, and that “genom ett strategiskt samarbete med Bonnier News, Gota Media och Erna Media kommer samtliga matcher i både grundserien och slutspel sändas på den gemensamma livesportplattformen och tillgängliggöras på koncernernas nationella och lokala sajter.”[4] It states: “Avtalet sträcker sig över säsongerna 2026/2027 och 2027/2028.”[4] On 22 September 2026 Bonnier News announced that the same cooperation would show every match of Hockeyettan, under an agreement it said covers three seasons.[6]
Mediemyndigheten's Medieekonomi 2024 records an earlier step: Bonnier News, Gota Media and NTM Media announced that they had jointly acquired “fleråriga rättigheter att sända matcher i några av de högre divisionerna inom svensk dam- och herrfotboll, bandyns elitserie och herrbasketens högsta liga”.[7] That statement names the media groups, not Expressen.
How large is Expressen Sport's audience?
Swedish newspaper reach is measured by Sifo's ORVESTO surveys. The reach report for ORVESTO Konsument 2026:1 takes print reach from ORVESTO Konsument and digital reach from ORVESTO Internet, both for January to April 2026, in thousands.[1] For Expressen Sport it gives 122 for print, 1 055 for the site and a total net reach of 1 103; for Expressen as a whole it gives 306, 2 351 and 2 435.[1] Both rows carry the footnote “Avser paketet EX/GT/KvP”, and the report defines digital reach for dagspress as an average day.[1]
The first report of the previous year, ORVESTO Konsument 2025:1, for January to April 2025, gave Expressen Sport 143 for print, 1 004 digital and a total net reach of 1 060, in thousands.[2] The two are separate readings of separate periods.
Online video is measured separately, by MMS. Mediemyndigheten's Medieekonomi 2024 records that Aftonbladet left those measurements at the end of 2022, and continues: “Några månader senare gjorde Expressen och morgonpressen med fleras videonätverk Showheros samma sak.”[7]
No audience figure for the live-sport platform or for individual broadcasts could be retrieved.
Since when has Expressen Sport existed?
No founding date for Expressen Sport, or for Expressen's sport coverage under any earlier name, could be retrieved. Expressen's own site could not be retrieved, and none of the documents retrieved gives one. What can be dated is its recent record.
Sifo's reach survey listed Expressen Sport as a brand of its own in its reports for January to April 2025 and January to April 2026.[2][1] Bonnier News launched the joint live-sport platform placed under Expressen in March 2026.[5] The Handbollsligan arrangement runs over the 2026/27 and 2027/28 seasons, and the Hockeyettan agreement was announced on 22 September 2026.[4][6]
The ownership statement is Mediemyndigheten's, in its 2024 report.[3]
Why does Expressen Sport matter in Sweden's sport?
It matters first because it is measured at national scale as a sport brand in its own right: a total net reach of 1 103 thousand for January to April 2026, on Sifo's figures for the EX/GT/KvP package.[1]
It matters second because its parent carries live domestic sport. The platform Bonnier News placed under Expressen shows the competitions its March 2026 release lists, and every Handbollsligan match of the 2026/27 and 2027/28 seasons according to the league.[5][4] Klas Granström said: “Vi fortsätter vår satsning på livesänd sport och det passar väldigt bra i vår strategi att tillföra en så stark rättighet som handbollsligan i vår portfölj.”[4]
It matters third because of how those rights are held. Handbollsligan names Sportway as the holder of its rights from August 2026, with the media groups carrying the matches through a strategic cooperation.[4]
